We Leap Into The Digital Age
Greg Wright, Managing Editor

Representing Hollywood Jesus, I participated in a national telephone press conference.  I asked whether there had been contingency plans for some unplanned, uncontrollable act of God that might have coincided with the planned DTV weekend. Acting FCC Chairman Michael J. Cobbs (!!) quickly referenced the "standard Nightlight" stations. Huh?

Cobbs lauded a "technology that has served us well" while praising the vision of a transition geared toward the "long term health of the broadcast industry."  Almost in a sense that such media events need justification (or perhaps to defuse criticisms that might arrive from transition problems), Cobbs cautioned journalists to "appreciate the scope of what we have just gone through," pointing out they had fielded 317,000 calls the previous day.

The "transition is not over," he reiterated, because the move is "not a one-day affair."  In the Q&A that followed his prepared remarks, he declined to offer a concrete timetable for when the crossover will be technically "complete"; but he advocated a "bit of patience and perseverance" as things progress.

One interesting claim was Cobb's assertion that the DTV shift transfored "a regulatory agency on the shores of the Potomoc into a grass roots organization."

Fringe

Another Reality
I enjoyed the pilot of Fringe, as evidenced by my review of it, and I chronicled the first four episodes before dropping off the map. The truth is that I've kept watching, but the life of the DVR-driven TV watcher is not one on a schedule!

So, now as the season comes to its close, I'm nearly caught up, and it is time for a recap... and some praise for a show that has already been renewed for a second season.

If you haven't seen any of this, then consider this the proposal for why you should watch the series on DVD when it comes out, or online right now. If you have, then use it as a reason to provoke others into conversation. We used to debate X-Files into the wee hours of the morning, and Lost seems to have lost its bluster, or at least its shiny newness, so why not Fringe?Click through for more of Jacob's season review...
