LATERALUS

DISCLAIMER: The review you are about to read is based on my opinion and my opinion alone. Agreement or disagreement is completely you the reader's decision. Your comments are always welcome.

Every once in a while art and progression collide and emerge into pop culture. Tool's Lateralus is one of those collisions. Tool definitely shows their maturity with an emotional rollercoaster ride of energetic and often long in length songs. Upon listening to this album I knew that my review would be centered more on the music than the message. Being a musician and appreciating progressive rock music can have that effect on you. But I will still try to interpret the best I can.

First of all, Danny Carey rapidly gains my attention as a drummer to be noticed and respected. Having said this, let's begin:

The Grudge introduces the CD with a rhythmic drive. It slithers its way through the speakers occasionally erupting with hard guitar and bass driven riffs. Over eight minutes long, it compares a grudge to dragging a heavy stone behind you. (Genesis 27:41, Leviticus 19:18) Justin Chancellor delivers some interesting bass fret tapping here. It also sounds as if Danny has taken the snares down on his snare drum.

Track two is a short guitar based instrumental that leads into number three.

The Patient displays some soft yet effective guitar work from Adam Jones. The song ascends into a melodic power ballad like mood. Breaking with off timing rhythms throughout. The song speaks of having extreme patience with one's choice in life. The first collection of verses tells of a vampire's victim. "This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old. But I'm still right here. Giving blood, keeping faith. And I'm still right here." But look past the gothic reference and to a choice that everyone must make. (Mathew 7:13) Have patience and faith in that choice.

Schism is the CD's first radio single. Schism is also a real word too.

DEFINITION: A separation or division into factions, especially within a religious body. The definition and the words of the song go hand in hand. If singer Maynard James Keenan is singing about the Christian church today, then unfortunately he is dead on. He also reminds me of the seven churches in Revelations. (Revelations 1:4,11) Schism begins with an off tempo bass pull off riff and continues this with light to heavy guitar and drums. Danny shows us some incredible off timing here.

Parabol is a somber dreamscape of sorts. Few words here. They seem to echo a moment in time shared by two people. "We barely remember what came before this precious moment, choosing to be here right now." Transcends into:

Parabola which is also a real word. DEFINITION: A plane curve formed by the locust of points equidistant from a fixed line and a fixed point not on the line. Lets hope the song makes more sense.

"Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing. This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality. Embrace this moment. Remember. We are eternal." Seems to state that we all live in a mortal shell and that our spirit within is eternal. Maynard has the basic idea. (John 6:63) Parabola is also the first to really rock on this CD.

Ticks And Leeches is another hard rocker that produces some melodic guitar chords. This style also take us back to Tool's underground metal roots. It is very well written about someone who has been wronged greatly by somebody else. The anger here is orchestrated beautifully with overtones of bass and drum beats. Toward the end the music completely explodes in rapid drumming and fast guitar chord strumming.

Lateralus is the ninth track and third time I've had to look up a word. The closet I could come was the word Lateralis, which is Latin for lateral, which then lead me to the term lateral pass; A football pass thrown sideways or backwards. All sports aside, Lateralus saturates us with sublime like lyrics that reflects the poetic styling of Jim Morrison. "I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human." The proverbial mind trip.

Disposition brings in the ten spot with almost five minutes of music and only thirteen words. "Mention this to me. Mention something, mention anything ... and watch the weather change." There you have it. Jungle bongo beats and other percussion wrap around the guitar and bass. Vocals are arranged in an almost middle eastern style.

Reflection speeds up the percussive rhythm and intros a very solid bass line. Wait, is that a sitar I hear- Reflection deals with finding hope when all is dark. (Proverbs 24:14)

Triad is a very long instrumental. Very well done. It keeps your attention.

Faaip De Oiad is a sci-fi masterpiece. It is an actual transcripts of the Art Bell AM radio show set behind music.

Lateralus has debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. Tool will be touring this summer with King Crimson as well. King Crimson is one of the chief pioneers of progressive rock music.

I HAVE NO RELIGION
Subject: Tool_Lateralus
Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002
From: "Bust"

Let me start by saying that I have no religion. I believe in freewill. Why do you have to believe in something to be righteous. I believe that tools lyrics are written to make people form opinions on what their talking about. Kinda like an abstract painting, You may see it one way and I might see it another way and the artist may have been thinking something completely different when he/she created it. This is what separates art from basic song patterns used to make a buck. Where you may describe the Title track Laturalus as a "proverbial mind trip" , I see it as a way for Maynard to express how the music makes him feel. The last lyrics of the song points this out to me. "With my feet upon the ground, I loose myself between the sound and open wide to suck it in , I feel it move across my skin, I'm reaching up and reaching out I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me whatever will bewilder me and far away by will and wind we may just go where no ones been we'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no ones been. Spiral out keep going Spiral out keep going . If he wasn't describing how music makes him feel than then he was describing how it makes me feel when I listen or play. But it doesn't have to be music, it can be anything that emotionally uplifts you to come to this state.

What you people think about this one ? ( being fan or not fan of Tool ?? )

Tool - çXema
Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullsh*t three ring circus sideshow of Freaks

Here in this hopeless f---ing hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any f---ing time, any f---ing day
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car

It's a Bullsh*t three ring circus sideshow of Freaks

Here in this hopeless f---ing hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any f---ing time, any f---ing day
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay

Some say a comet will fall from the sky
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipsh*ts

Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will 'cause
I sure could use a vacation from this

Silly sh*t, stupid sh*t...

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied

Learn to swim

Mom's gonna fix it all soon
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be

Learn to swim

f--- L. Ron Hubbard and
f--- all his clones
f--- all those gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes

Learn to swim

f--- retro anything
f--- your tattoos
f--- all you junkies and
f--- your short memory

Learn to swim

f--- smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas
f--- these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses

Learn to swim

'cause I'm praying for mayhem
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way
I wanna watch it all go down
Mom please flush it all away
I wanna see it go right in and down
I wanna watch it go right in
Watch you flush it all away

Time to bring it down again
Don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines

I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend

I wanna see it all come down
Suck it down
Flush it down

A dream of life, and how it should be. People ponder and worry their minds about when the world is goi ng to end. Will it be tommorow or today? Who cares? We have lost focus of what life is. It isn't about what we own or who we are friends with. Life is about this moment, who we are inside and out, what we share with each other. I feel that Maynard paints a clear picture of how society has become a monster. We lost the whole meaning of life. We have become obssesed with money, sex, and power. Not about love for each other, the ability to understand someone else, to share the pain someone feels, to care about what we do. The morality has been lost and it's time we brought it back. I believe Maynard just used L.A. as an example. The whole U.S. is like it. The world is like it. To me the sweetest taste is the one of revival. A new and fresh start. It's like when you wash your face when you wake up. Cool and soothing. It hurts to see the insainty, to hear people hate so much. To know what people feel. And personally, seeing all this hate and lack of compassion make some want to have faith in something more powerful than us. Because that is what it would take to make things right again. Put aside our petty wants, and feel for a change. Money, drugs, meaningless sex, it is all false realities. Something to hold you in one place. Think outside the box. Think outside of your body and trust in your spirit. Allow your soul to join with others and celebrate life. But many don't see it, they just want to be laid, intoxicated, famous, and rich. Money is a object, not a prson. Why love it. Why put aside you awareness to feel helpless? Why share yourself with someone you don't care about? Why waste your life worring about what people think of you, and not focus on what you think about you. Be who you are, you're better that way. Seems like it does need to be washed away. He said it best, "Don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines!"

to unlearn1 i think you need to take another look at the song opiate again and actualkly analyze it before making a passionately misled response like you did. while i may be wrong i would like to offfer another interprtation of the song. for starters the song is being spoken from another point of view, he is sarcastically commenting on the institution of the church, not the ideal. the title "opiate" refers, i believe to the marxist statement that "religion is the opiate of the masses". karl marx believed that religion was sedating people from realizing the oppression of the proleteriat. here maynard is again preaching, sarcastically, his motto of " think for yourself, question authority". here he is specifically challenging blind faith in religious authorities. towards the end of your quoted text he does present a belief of his that , i believe, isn't sarcastic "Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life. Open my eyes and blind me with your light and your lies." this can be seen in two different ways the obvious way would be to interpret this as a direct attack on jesus and his teachings, which oif course has merit, the other would be to see this as a personal struggle with faith; and faith should be a struggle, you should debate constantly your beliefs, the only way you can have a healthy relationship with your god is to open a dialougue with him or her. i think that maynard is simply opening a forum for debate. before i end this i would like to say that this is only my interpretation of the song and i would encourage any who disagree to post thier opinions.
thanks .

i saw tool play at ozzfest a few years ago, throughout their set maynard parodized the stereotypical televangelist, before they went into into pushit he basis that the bible has alot of good messeges such as love.i don't think they have anything against christianity, they admired bill hicks the comedian who was a christian but mocked what christianity has become. but, isn't what really matters is as artists tool has free will what god gave us to seperate us from animals and ultimatly it is their choice what they believe in be it crowley or christ. if tool's music bothers you then how strong of a christian can you be. their most important messege is to think for your self. stop worrying about if tool, megadeth or for that matter creed are devil worshippers. tool's lyrics hold a better understanding of what jesus was really about than creed , p.o.d or any body else trying to make money off of god. by the way he is coming back soon if you don't believe it just watch the news . get right with god on your own terms and stop worrying about everyone else

JUST THE WORD SPEAKS VOLUMES TO ME

Tool. Just the word now speaks volumes to me. Tool have done things that 10 years ago would have seen unrealistic. In our current world that is centred around commericial capitalisation and exploitation Tool have taken something so unprecedented and unparralled and taken it to te top to a state where it so big no longer can it be ignored.

Tool's impact continues well beyond the music and the lyrics. Tool have tapped into a world of thought and insight that has only previously been approached by interprative art. Tool's performance philosophy seems to be working along the lines of forget everything else let's do art. How else can you explain the cerebral exploration that is the film in the background during their live performances of Parabol/Parabola?\

The only previous example of this kind of experience I can recall is Led Zeppelin's live perfromance of 'Dazed and Confused'. Tool tap into a whole new realm with their music something I believe they would have never considered upon their inception. Try going to bed listening to Tool and see what thoughts you wake up with. Tool's music drives people into new places both physically and mentally. Just take the many postings on this bullentin board as evidence. Tool produce a sonic experience that allows the listener not only to enjoy the general groove created but upon deeper analysis of the songs provokes an exploration of different interpretations of the same words. That's how i found it at least.

So thank you Tool all religious discussions aside the longer Tool remain a band of this calibre I believe the music scene is going to go places that we could never dream of.

Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to use you...
like me,
like me.

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me.
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

My God's will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies.

tool is a weapon...designed to kill the christian god and his dogma...there is only one god...and it is earth...she is our mother..everything we have been and will ever be, come from her...if you dont understand this you should read a couple books...."ishmael" and "the story of b" both by daniel quinn if you still dont understand....may death have mercy on you.......

well, I guess this is just one more place to use as an example of how you can not escape, dare I call them, "misguided" analyses. I just can't bite my tongue on the (I believe it was) "tool is one of the most ardent stalwarts of atheism" comment.. I mean, for tool fans, it needs not to be acknowledged, but I really am left unsettled at the fact that anyone who listens to tool, or anyone who doesn't and is affected negatively by seeing this statement, could give this comment any merit. please just keep in mind that is one man's opinion. (which also happens to go against the spoken words of each of the band members, I'm willing to wager. I'd bet three ripe bananas on it!) find out for yourselves, don't write in and say "oh, Rob should I as a (enter religious title here) listen to this music? these are not my words, but I speak them with all my heart.. THINK FOR YOURSELF. it is this child's opinion that tool has a very positive, enlightening, emotional, growth oriented message. and if you as a musical connoisseur can see, hear and feel through the verbal connotations some are so eager to get hung up on, and look into the denotations that some are so eager to overlook, maybe..JUST MAYBE you'll be able to allow this bands music to give you something wonderful.

oh, and uh.. jesus is coming. claire

Well, I enjoyed the fact that the reviewer was a tool fan and respected the talent of the musicians. I personally believe that tool is the most unique and important band working in the industry today. I did, however, get a good laugh from your attempts to decipher the lyrics. I would never be so bold as to say that this song meant this, or that song meant that... How do you know when Maynard is speaking literally or metaphorically? I'm fairly positive that Maynard is against Christianity, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I'm just reading the clues from their lyrics, mainly songs like Eulogy and Opiate, and the hidden track on undertow.... But maybe it's not so much anti-Christian as just a "think for yourself" mentalitly. But a think for yourself attitude seems anti-Christian by definition, if it weren't for all you sheep out there Christianity would have faded away by now.

Pls post this..

In the talks over TooL on this board, the official website had this too say over what was posted on this board....

"... they (Australia) celebrate Easter the exact same way we do: commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus by telling our children a giant bunny rabbit left chocolate eggs in the night. Now, I wonder why we?re f***** up as a race. Anybody got any idea? You know, I?ve read the Bible. I can?t find the word bunny or chocolate anywhere in the f***ing book. Where do they come up with this shit? Why not goldfish left Lincoln logs in your sock drawer? As long as you?re making shit up - you know - go hog-wild. At least the goldfish with a Lincoln log on its back going across your carpet has some miraculous connotations: "Mum, today I found a Lincoln log in me sock drawer." That?s the story of Jesus...
- Bill Hicks

In the spirit of this Xtian holiday (actually, originally a pagan fertility rite - perhaps that?s where the bunny comes in, but shhhhh...), we would like to offer some friendly guidance to those fans who are, perhaps, having a dilemma of sorts with regards to whether or not the contents of "LATERALUS" are suitable to their personal religious beliefs. First though, we?d like to thank our friend Greg at the "DailyGrail" site for suggesting that we take a look at the "Lateralus" review posted on the hollywoodjesus.com site. Overall, it is a very positive review, with the reviewer drawing parallels (in his interpretation of the lyrics)between Maynard?s words and Xtian (or Galilean) teachings. This, however, seems to have caused confusion among some of the site?s Xtian readers. For instance, one poor souls asks: "Is this for real? Tool Christains? What... ( I ) need more evidence. A few years ago I tossed my Tool CD ?cause I thought it was a bad influence; to this day I switch them off on the radio. Am I way off or are you?"

Well, here?s our advice: If Tool?s music and lyrics are at odds with your beliefs, then you DID the right thing in tossing it (although we suggest next time you destroy it by burning it in a fireplace so that a like-minded individual doesn?t happen upon it and find him/herself subjected to its questionable contents). However, in light of this new interpretation on the hollywoodjesus.com site that the band may be espousing Xtian principles, then you have made a terrible mistake, and should definitely BUY another copy. In fact, I was talking about this with Adam the other night in our local pub and he suggested that you should probably buy TWO COPIES just in case someone else convinces you that the band is in league with the devil. This way, when another Xtain review gives the CD the green light, you?ll already have a backup to enjoy without having to go out and find another copy. I mean, what if Wal-Mart is temporarily out of stock?

Here?s another comment on their bulletin board: "Some of the references (on Aenima) made to Christianity are somewhat harsh, but I believe Tool has always intended to attack the sometimes corrupt institution of the church, rather than the actual religion and the beliefs of Christians."

Ah, you?re getting warmer... and while we?re on the subject of this "sometimes corrupt institution", I didn?t want to say anything, but, I understand that there are 45,000 of them out there, boys and girls (but mainly little boys). The good news is that (so the Pope says) they won?t be protected by the Church anymore. ANYMORE? Here we have another example of self-preservation at any price. Want to bet that we?ll soon have another mysterious wave of "Blessed Virgin Mary" sightings somewhere to help defray the cost (300 million) of settlements paid to those molested by the Pope?s pedophile-priests? Strangest of all, when describing the actions of the guilty priests, the Pope referred to the "mystery of evil." Mystery?!! What?!! I thought they knew what caused evil. Isn?t it supposed to be the Devil? You know, the guy with the horns and red tail. All those people burned to death at the stake - wasn?t that because of the Devil? You?re not gonna tell us now that it was an inherited defect their biochemistry, are you? Part of our low-budget creation, or the shoddy work of an inferior God? Remember what Hicks said about Waco: When the Feds tried to justify their actions by saying that they thought the cult members might be child molesters, he replied that if that was the case then why don?t we see tanks knocking down the doors to the Catholic church?

TOOL's religious beliefs
Subject: Tool_Lateralus

From: Vito

I have been a Christian all my life and a huge Tool fan for the past 7 years. I own and love all of their albums. After giving Maynard's lyrics much thought as well as things he has said in interviews, it appears to me that Maynard is definitely not a Christian, but I don't feel that he is necessarily anti-Christian either. Basically his message seems to be "Think for yourself and don't be afraid to question your beliefs." Contrary to what many might think, I don't think this philosophy is Anti-Christian. I think Maynard's feelings are that if you are a Christian it should be because you have spent time thinking about your spirituality and studying Christianity as well as other religions and made an informed decision that Christianity is right for you. He doesn't feel that you should be a Christian just because your parents are or because you met a really charismatic person who convinced you that you should be one.

I feel so sorry for Josh. Why would you toss music that you love because the musicians may not be Christians? Does that mean that you will not listen to Buddhists, Wiccans or Jains? Personally, I consider Jerry Falwell a much worse influence on the masses than bands like Tool and Nine Inch Nails. Stop being a sheep Josh-- its ba-aa-aa-ad for you. I've listened to Tool for many years and never found them to be offensive. To reply to the child whom threw out his cd GOOD FOR U. Make a stance for yourself and toss out an out sider. But, don't persuade your views on anyone else just because your wacked in the head. Tool has alot of depth and meaning in their songs. Some too deep to swim in. So don't try and analyize Tool, just enjoy the show. Take them for what they are, A BAND NOT A GOD !!!!!!!

CHRISTIANS?
Subject: Tool_Lateralus
Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002
From: "Hamish

Tool? Christians? Thats funny. Tool is one of the most ardent stalwarts of atheism in music today.

Examples:

The Grudge:
"Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell."

This refers directly to belief in christ. ie that your belief impisons you.

I won't go through all of the little references to god in the albums, but here is a good one from the secret track on Undertow (their second album). Go right to the end of the last track and you'll hear:

Farm noises, bleating of sheep

"And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus. Life feeds on life feeds on life feed! s on life feeds on........

This is necessary."

In BAM Magazine (11/94), the creation of the song is explained: "In May 1993, Tool performed at Scientology's Celebrity's Centre, apparently not knowing that this was the home of the cult. Once they found out, they were not taking it nicely. Between songs, Keenan, staring first at the lush grounds paid for by devoted L. Ron followers and then into the eyes of his own audience, bayed into the mic like a sheep looking for his shepherd's gate. 'Baaaaa! Baaaaa!' the singer bleated." (tool FAQ, http://toolshed.down.net/faq/faq.html)

You might argue that scientology is a cult and that christianity as a whole is not the target. You might also be wrong. To make the point though, I refer you too Maynard Keenans side project, A Perfect Circle. Maynard sings and writes the lyrics for this band; there biggest hit to date, Judith: a song explicitley about Jesus and his followers. I quote:

"You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
f*ck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why"

I won't continue, it's easy enough to find on the internet.
And most people would say that A perfect circle is the more moderate of the two bands.

TREATING IT AS ART

Interesting review. I appreciate your treating Tool as an art form rather than a pop culture force. I feel that the beauty and emotionality of art is lost on many in the modern church, as well as modern culture in general. I'm a Christian, and to me art is a gift from God. We can all learn something if we approach in an open and vulnerable way. Thank God for Tool.

TOOL WHAT?

I was just wondering if the Reverend Maynard has seen this.
I am a fanatic, and am personally curious how he would feel about your interpretation of their latest.
By the way, have you heard any of their older stuff?

TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY

I definitely agree with those who think you should listen to some of their older music if you want to make a judgement, but who wants to take that responsibility on themselves (making a judgement, that is)? I have been a christ follower all my life, and I have heard all of tool's stuff, and, well, those two facts dont really conflict. I find their music incomparable to anything else, and sometimes feel guilty with the extent that I "worship" their music. Nevertheless, lateralus lights a fire inside of me that few other things in life do, and there isnt a time I listen to it that I dont find myself thanking God for that.

ONE OF THE BEST BANDS

Tool is one of the best bands to ever come together. I was ecstatic when I got the chance to see them in Chicago on their Lateralus tour. I got a floor ticket because

I was the first in line. Damn, that concert is the best one that I have been to yet! The floor was packed and I could barely breathe with the crowd swaying to the rhythm of the music, but I would do it all over again. Slayer, Pantera, Soulfly, etc. are others that I've seen live, but Tool has them all beat.

I love the way they combine images with their lyrics and notes. Every riff and word speak to you in a way that no other band could. The only two bands that I like better

than Tool are the Smashing Pumpkins and NIN. Everybody praises Kid Rock and Fred Durst for writing "kick-ass" songs, when all of the talent that you need is right here.

"Lateralus" is the best album that Tool has written yet. And fans never know what their next move will be.

DIFFERENT SPIRITUAL CONCEPTS
Subject: Tool_Lateralus

From: lonicera

i can see the parallels tool's music has with christian principles, but to truly come to understand where tool seems to stand spiritually, one must look at different spiritual concepts--there are direct references made to the Flower of Life (used in many religions and even by the ancient Egyptians), consciousness described as an infinite spiral (see track 9, "Lateralis"), and many other things, including the evolution of human beings into higher levels of consciousness. please see the site (no, it isn't my own) innuendocornercopria.com for a comprehensive study of all the spiritual aspects behind tool's music.

one last note: if you were to analyze tool's last major album, Aenima, you would find many other references to religion and spirituality. now, some of the references made to christianity are somewhat harsh, but i believe tool has always intended to attack the sometimes corrupt institution of the church rather than the actual religion and the beliefs of christians.

This is a really good album. Tools last two albums have been amazing. Well worth investigating.
