BEHIND THE SCENES
MOVIE BRINGS OUT FAMILY ISSUES
Rebonds with father, Jon Voight

Click to enlargeIn a surprisingly emotional and candid interview, Angelina Jolie told NBC News' Ann Curry she was devastated by the public's reaction to the kiss she gave her brother at the Oscars last year. The interview was broadcasted on "Dateline NBC" Friday, June 8. (Pictured l-r: Anne Curry, Angelina Jolie)

Speaking about the gossip over the kiss, a tearful Jolie told Curry, "It's affected my relationship with my brother. But I don't think there's a person out there that actually believes I slept with my brother. There's not one person that really thinks that's true. So it makes me confused and very angry with the press, because they think it's much more important to write shocking, stupid stories and ignore something beautiful that happened. You know, their interpretation of it is for their own sick thoughts."

Jolie was painfully vulnerable when asked about her relationship with her husband, Billy Bob Thornton and her father, Jon Voight. She told Curry how lost and insecure she felt earlier in her life. "I wasn't laughing very much in my life about anything and kind of always would see people with kids, or married or in love and thought, 'That's great. Not my life.' And I wish I could have that, but I am never going to have that because I am all over the place and I'm never going to be calm or stable or normal or safe." Click to enlarge

In her new movie, "Tomb Raider," Jolie says that the renewed bond with her on-screen father, Jon Voight, who is also her true biological father, parallels their relationship in true life. She tells Curry that working together on the set was very emotional. "John and I could not stop crying. We'd have to stop takes," she says.

Click to enlargeJolie is good natured about her family situations, however. On SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (NBC Late Night 5-13-2000), for example, there was a spin on a Dysfunctional Family Reunion: (seated, l-r) Newlyweds Angelina Jolie (Molly Shannon) and Billy Bob Thornton (Jimmy Fallon) are surprised by (standing, l-r) Jolie's oddly amorous brother James Haven (Chris Kattan) and their love child Kerplixik (Rachel Dratch).

THE MOVIE IS KOOLER
Subject: tomb raider

From: Frosty

i think the movie was great i have played the game and wasn't to satisfied.. i think the game is kool but the movie was kooler. this movike wasn't only set for adults so it was best to leave out the showar senes. i think that comin up with a tomb raider 2 would be a challenge set to the way the mad the endin of the first.. i like the guns lara croft(Angelina Jolie) used also the way she acted and play the part in the movie. the movie wasn't to far fetched but so parts were a little odd. I thought that the way she was sarcastic sort of protected her. The more cocky she got the more serious the movie became. As I watched the movie I was at the ned of my seat. I am one for action more movement than any love story or thriller. there was some comedy in the movie and when there was it was the right time just to keep you interestead. The movie showed not all women are prissy and can't kill a spider. It shows that some are capable of being on there own. I think the part of her bein in the army also showed why lara was that way. i think more kids probable watched this because more kids played the game than adults. Mostly i think that keepin out the most of the adult parts was a good way to produce the movie. Many adults thought the movie was dll but for a 12-15 year old the movie was exitin and it showed that not all men are sronger that women. The part of her having to be the daughter of a genious brightin the way of the movie how she always had the next step figured out.I think it is pretty kool how she does the live rounds and fights simon in her house. Also she has a huge house wich sets the story just about right. Lara showin that because she was in the army she wasn't goin to wear no dress was pretty cool. The movie showed a little violence but nothin bad. i wouldn't receomend it for little kids but teens is more the area this movie was made for. I liek tomb raider alot and i watched it over and over again. I can't get over the action and i like her guns. They are awsome. I think the movie was a success..!!!

GREAT SUPPLY OF SPIRITUAL IMAGERY

My wife and I went to see Tomb Raider on it's opening night, and we left very satisfied with it. While I have not played the game (tsk-tsk), I admit to not having the same perspective as most Lara Croft fans. However, looking at the movie objectively and without a lot of expectations left me very impressed. It was both fun and substantial.

My best summary of what the movie was meant to be is a female Indiana Jones saves the world while experiencing resolution of her own inner struggles.

Tomb Raider is loaded with spiritual imagery. Aside from the overt stuff like a visit to a Buddhist monastery or visions pointing the way toward a goal, there are many scenes in which a subtle hint points toward something beyond the obvious. For example, when Lara decides to go off and save the world, her usual plain t-shirt is replaced by one with a red cross painted on it reminiscent of the garb of the crusaders. Also, later in the movie she sheds some of her own blood in the process of stopping the evil. Her sacrifice is very messianic in tone, even to the extent of overcoming the ultimate temptation in that sacrifice.

As for possibly objectionable content, I couldn't find any. There was a couple of shower scenes, but very tastefully done and with a certain sense of humor. (Spoiler alert!) The second one sent groans through the audience when they realized it wasn't Lara. Overall, the director did a great job of putting in some sensuality without any excessive overt sexuality. Another interesting point this movie brings to bear is the existence of a secret society bent on the acquisition of world power through secret knowledge. This is none other than gnosticism, which was one of the early heresies that Christianity dealt with in its early years. It's interesting to see how this selfish desire for god-like power is overcome by good.

I've been waiting to see a review of the movie at hollywoodjesus, but with none there I figured I'd put in my two cents. I'd be interested in reading some other in depth thoughts about the movie.

MY COMMENTS

Angelina herself was very good in her part, very sexy, and she came across very independant which was what that part demanded (When she lifts those eyebrows of hers...very sexy!).

The plot carried, wasn't brilliant, but it carried.

The other actors were good (especially the sidekicks), 2 dimensional, but good because they didn't exactly have too much to work with. What did not suffice in my opinion, was the music. Music is of absolute paramount importance in an action movie like this, and these choices didn't cut it. The tunes playing when Lara is doing her stuff in full flight did not contribute to the atmosphere at all (with the exception of the alternative piece when she's on the sled going into that temple joint), and this slightly ruined those scenes for me...

There was no Prodigy - Climbatize when the bad guys break into Croft Manor (as the teaser suggests). Personally, I would've liked a soundtrack more geared towards the alternative/heavy metal side since this tone fits well with action 9/10 times.

On the whole though, I will watch it a second time purely because I totally ADORE that accent...not to mention the body!

3 STARS

Don't expect too much form this movie! After seeing The Return of the Mummy (5 stars), Tomb Raider seem a little too tame and the story lacked content. I'm a Tomb Raider fan of Lara Croft and enjoy playing the games. If the producers could have beefed up the special effects and created longer action scenes it may have reached some of my expectation. They left out Lara's famous under water scenes and other stunts that are expected by gamers. The games are better than the movie though I expected the movie to be better than the games. Also, if the movie left out some of the provocative scenes (the showers and a few bad words, which are not in the games) that would have made me feel more comfortable bring my children to see the movie. I give the movie 3 stars.
