THE SWEETEST THING As for the title, I don't think the sweetest thing is a sexy babe or a hot guy, it's not even sex. It's love and a committed relationship. This was not the message I expected to get when I went out to this movie. Review by ANNETTE WIERSTRA

I'll bet a lot of people will think that the sweetest thing about this movie is Cameron Diaz or maybe Christina Applegate. They may be right, but this movie is about more than good-looking actresses.
This might surprise you: The Sweetest Thing is really about real love and commitment. Yes, it is a movie by the makers of Something about Mary and it is almost as sickening in places. It is rated R for good reason.
At the heart of the story is three women looking for love in all the wrong ways. Enter Christina (Diaz) and Courtney (Applegate) two wild and free women in their late twenties, dancing, drinking and dating their life away. Both believe that the search for Mr. Right is futile and they are settling for Mr. Right Now. (There are some spoilers coming up, so you might not want to read before you see the movie.) Enter Jane, the third roommate, who has just been dumped from a long-term boyfriend. Christina and Courtney are going to show the innocent Jane that vulnerability is out and a good time is in. The three dress up, and head out for the bar to party the night away. Enter Peter, the man who rebuffs Jane. Jane brushes of the rejection, while Christina gives him and earful - you don't have to be a genius to see where this is going.
While attracted to Peter, Christina refuses an offer to meet up with him because she is scared to date a man she actually likes. But she regrets her cowardice. She is infatuated and she can't get Peter off her mind. Courtney convinces Christina, that she must grasp her last chance and go to Peter's brother's wedding in across state. When they arrive, they discover to Christina's complete humiliation, that Peter lied and it's his own wedding. Before she knows that it's Peter's wedding, Christina meets the cold-footed bride in the bathroom and re-assures her that the marriage will work. "And if not, you can always get divorced," Christina says flippantly. The bride forges ahead with the ceremony until she comes face to face with Peter. With an excellent juxtaposition of the words of a traditional wedding ceremony, Peter and his bride discuss how they aren't ready for real commitment. The priest's speech of taking the commitment seriously and not entering into marriage lightly are also contrasted with his not-so-subtle encouragements to shut up and forge ahead. They call the wedding off, but it is too late for Christina and Peter. She thinks he is married and he has no idea of how to reach her. Or is it. . .
In the meantime, Christina and Courtney have realized that the life of a party girl is getting old and so are they. They no longer want to settle for Mr. Right Now - they want Mr. Right. Christina admits she is in a rut, lonely and depressed. She is having a hard time moving past the party girl fa?ade. I won't tell you what happens in the end, but I will say it's not a tragedy. At first glance, this movie is trashy humor - and some of it sinks really low. But I found it really interesting that it still reinforced a more traditional view of lasting marriage, love and real commitment. The best scene to demonstrate that was the wedding scene. It showed how societal pressures from family or even your priest, could be telling you that a relationship is right. But marriage shouldn't be taken lightly, and divorce shouldn't be seen as an escape hatch. As for the title, I don't think the sweetest thing is a sexy babe or a hot guy, it's not even sex. It's love and a committed relationship. This was not the message I expected to get when I went out to this movie. Take the rating seriously and if toilet and sexual jokes are not to your taste, don't bother going out to see The Sweetest Thing. But if you are looking for love in all the wrong places, this movie might be more help then you might think. ![]() SPIRITUAL INSIGHTS For True and Lasting Relationships Compiled by David Bruce
In the movie poster Cameron Diaz is holding a Book entitled "True Love, The Ten Commandments." I thought it would be fun to do The Ten Quotes for a lasting relationship 1. God rejoices when one beggar scratches another. 2. Do good to your friend to keep him, to your enemy to gain him. 3. Every person we meet in the course of a day is a dignified, essential human soul, and we are guilty of gross inhumanity when we snub or abuse him. 4. Half the misery in the world comes because one person demands of another a complete understanding, which is absolutely impossible. 5. Anyone who builds a relationship on less than openness and honesty is building on sand. 6. A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror. 7. If we try to find lasting joy in any human relationship, it will end in vanity, something that passes like a morning cloud. The true joy of anyone?s life is in a relationship to God. 8. If you expect to find peace in the friendship of any person, you are likely to be disappointed. But if you are intimate with God, the disloyalty or death of a friend will not crush you. 9. The man or woman who does not know God demands an infinite satisfaction from other human beings which they cannot give. 10. For a relationship with God click here. PHOTOS
