CLASSIC
RELIGIOUS ART BOOKS Great
art that reflects spirituality.
With masters like Leonardo DaVinci, Dore, Rembrandt and others.
Books no coffee table should be without.
The Doré
Bible Illustrations are magnificent. One looks at them and marvels at
their intricacy and sensitivity. Everyone who sees this book asks how
to obtain a copy. It is a brilliant. This is be far
the most popular book offered by Hollywood Jesus. It has inspired
many Hollywood films. See AMISTAD for example.
Absolutely
perfect! These pictures capture the essence and feel of the Divine Comedy
perfectly. An artistic vision of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. Nobody else
could have caught the mood of Dante's masterpiece more accurately. Dore
and Dante are both geniuses.
Gustave Dore's
romantic style of illustration, imaginative and richly detailed, was ideally
suited to literary subjects. His wood-engraved illustrations for John
Milton's monumental epic poem PARADISE LOST--recounting humankind's
fall from the grace of God through the work of Satan--were among Dore's
finest works. This volume presents superb black-and-white reproductions
of all 50 plates
This book
is really great because it provides the reader with an extensive view
of Dore's work. It displays more than a hundred high quality full-paged
engravings for a very low price.
The woodcuts
in this book leap out at you with a ferocious and violent intent. I've
seen the originals and the reproduction job here is nothing short of superb.
It's hard to believe that such visions of the apocalypse come from Germany
in the early part of the millennium. You can't miss this book! The engraving
book is also way kool.
Universally
acclaimed as one of the greatest artists of all time, Rembrandt
often turned to Scripture for inspiration. Many of his works, crafted
with vitality and emotion that stir the spirit, depict events of the Old
Testament. Rembrandt: The Old Testament features reproductions of sixty-eight
of these pieces, including color oils, drawings, and black-and-white etchings.
In this truly unique collection, each piece is accompanied by the Scripture
that inspired the seventeenth-century artist.
Many of his
works, crafted with vitality and emotion that stir the spirit, depict
events of the Christmas story. This unique collection of reproductions
of color oils, drawings, and black and white etchings depict everything
from the angel Gabriel's announcement of Jesus' birth to the adoration
of shepherds and wise men. Each piece is accompanied
by the Scripture that inspired the seventeenth century artist. This
a lavish, beautiful gift book that will become a treasured Christmas tradition.
Hardcover. 80 Pages.
This concise but illuminating introduction to the sources, symbolism,
and meanings of the biblical Book of Revelation brings together visionary
images by some of the greatest artists of Western culture, including Fra
Angelico, William Blake, Hieroymous Bosch, Michelangelo, Raphael, Peter
Paul Rubens, Luca Signorelli, and J.M.W. Turner. 250 illustrations,
247 in color.
The
best of William Blake
(and then some!), taken off the shelf, dusted off and propped up for the
rest of eternity to consider. From the aphorisms of "The Marriage of Heaven
and Hell" (required reading) to the later prophetic books, it's Blake
in all of his...Blakeness. And let's give a hand to Kazin for his fantastic
Introduction to one of the heavy-hitters of the Western tradition.
Schnorr
Von Carolsfeld's Bible in picture form
has been the standard teaching Bible for German children of the past 130
years. These most Raphaelite compositions are perfect in their drawing,
design and storytelling. Each of Von Carolsfeld's compositions have the
paradoxical qualities of balance and spontaneity, of grace and strength
and of monumentality and minute attention to detail. So, it is about time
that the art world's great publishing friend, Dover Books, makes these
somewhat forgotten illustrations easily and widely available with this
handsome edition.
This
book was illustrated after the Sistine Chapel was cleaned and Michelangelo's
vibrant colors were brought back for us to enjoy. The
author gives a short history of Michelangelo's life, places him in the
context of the Renaissance that he was such a major part of. She shows
some of his other works, but this is all unimportant. What is the grabbing
point of this book are the photographs of the Sistine Chapel after the
cleaning. The colors that glow from the paintings Michelangelo did are
so beautiful and unexpected from what we have seen of the Chapel before
the cleaning. Michelangelo's genius shows through at last and this book
gives you the chance to enjoy every bit of it. The photography is excellent
and for such a small price the whole beauty of the ceiling is yours to
enjoy over and over. I highly recommend this jewel of a book.
Painting
the Word: Christian Pictures and their Meanings by John Drury, an Anglican
priest who is dean of Christ Church, Oxford, is a wise, accessible, elegant,
and beautiful book about Christian art. Painting the Word presents dazzling
color reproductions of masterpieces by Rembrandt, Raphael,
Rubens, Vel?quez, Piero della Francesca, C?anne, and others,
accompanied by a text that does not merely analyze and explain these pictures
but also meditates upon them, and even encourages readers to inhabit them.
Drury's introduction explains his project: "This is a book about how Christian
paintings convey their messages. It takes on whole paintings. It is not
content with just picking symbols out of them for identification. Composition,
color, contents (including architecture and landscape as well as figures)
and the ways in which the paint itself is handled--all are treated as
part and parcel of their religious meanings."
Searching
always for the spirituality that inspired their work, de Borchgrave's
work shows us how Christian artists through the ages strove in mosaic,
paint, and stone "to enrich the mind, touch the heart, and feed the soul."
For all who want to broaden and deepen their appreciation of religious
art, this magnificent volume offers: ?Over 100 superb color reproductions
of some of the world?s greatest paintings
?The story of 2000 years of Christian art?from
early wall-paintings to contemporary works by living artists
?Explorations into the lives of more than fifty of the
world's greatest artists
?Fascinating insights into the spirituality of the artists and how it
informed and shaped their work
