 DELIVER
US FROM EVIL
As the official synopsis reads, "Once in the shadow of the
Romulan Empire, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew
are thrust into the center of a plot that could lead to the destruction
of Earth at the hands of a new and chilling nemesis." Notice
the high contrast between Light and Darkness in the presence of
the Nemesis, giving us a clear distinction between good and evil.
What is uncertain is how to deal with the certain evil.
NOW
WE SEE THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY
Picard sets the tone for the story with a quote from the King James
Bible, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face
to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also
I am known" (1 Cor. 13:12, Picard quotes the first half only)."
The
idea in the story is that we do not see the future clearly --we
may not know how to overcome the present evil that confronts us--
but we continue on, ever learning as we go forward.
WHAT
DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN
The film explores the question, "What does it mean to be fully
human?" The Android Data has always wondered about the human
experience and has attempted to become more human-like. In this
episode his quest is the focus. Contained in the answer to this
question is the deliverance from the evil that seeks to destroy
the crew.
A
CHRIST-LIKE EVENT
Data takes on a role that has connections to the sacrificial death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As Jesus died for the salvation
of humanity, so Data sacrifices himself for the salvation of the
crew. His action is the ultimate answer to the meaning of being
fully human.
Data
has a resurrection (of type) from the dead via his twin brother
B-4.
THE
FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN
Has the Star Trek series run its course?
On
its opening weekend (15 DEC 2002) the Nemesis movie pulled 18.5
million dollars, which was far below expectations for a $70 million
production. The following weekend it dipped nearly 75% to 4.5 million.
50% is considered poor. Such response to Nemesis may mean the end
of the movie series.
So
what has gone wrong?
Star
Trek has become tired. It explores no new frontiers. Where it is,
it has been there before. Years ago, it took us into the uncertain
future and explored new frontiers and gave us hope. It was creative
and imaginative. But that was then.
The
two key operative words today are creative and imaginative. Star
Trek: Nemesis is neither.
