SPIRITUAL
CONNECTIONS
ON REALITY
|
|
A
test of what is real is that it is hard and rough. Joys are found
in it, not pleasure. What is pleasant belongs to dreams.
--SIMONE WEIL (1909–1943)
How
reluctantly the mind consents to reality!
--NORMAN DOUGLAS (1868–1952)
Journalism
is pure fantasy, and news is fantasy. Reality belongs to eternity
and therefore has no news value.
--MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE (1903–1990)
The
sky is not less blue because the blind man does not see it.
--DANISH PROVERB

MYSTERIES
AND REALITY
--C. S. LEWIS
It is no good asking for a simple religion. After all, real things
aren’t simple. They look simple, but they’re not.
The table I’m sitting at looks simple: but ask a scientist
to tell you what it’s really made of—all about the
atoms and how the light waves rebound from them and hit my eye,
and what they do to the optic nerve, and what it does to my brain—and,
of course, you find that what we call “seeing a table”
lands you in mysteries and complications which you can hardly
get to the end of. . . .
Reality, in fact, is always something you couldn’t have
guessed. That’s one of the reasons I believe Christianity.
. . . It has just that queer twist about it that real things have.
Colossians
2:2-10
-The Message Translation of the Bible
I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything
there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and
at rest, focused on Christ, God's great mystery. All the richest
treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery
and nowhere else. And we've been shown the mystery! I'm telling
you this because I don't want anyone leading you off on some wild-goose
chase, after other so-called mysteries, or "the Secret."
I'm
a long way off, true, and you may never lay eyes on me, but believe
me, I'm on your side, right beside you. I am delighted to hear
of the careful and orderly ways you conduct your affairs, and
impressed with the solid substance of your faith in Christ.
My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead
with what you've been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master;
now live him. You're deeply rooted in him. You're well constructed
upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you've
been taught. School's out; quit studying the subject and start
living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving.
Watch
out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual
double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments
that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through
the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions
of spirit beings. But that's not the way of Christ. Everything
of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly.
You don't need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize
the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without
him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you,
too. His power extends over everything.

SPIRITUAL
CONNECTIONS
THE MEANING OF BEING HUMAN
|
|
Every
human person is an aristocrat. Every human person is noble and of
royal blood, born from the intimate depths of the divine nature
and the divine wilderness.
--MEISTER ECKHART (C. 1260–C. 1327)
Our
humanity were a poor thing were it not for the divinity that stirs
within us.
--FRANCIS BACON (1561–1626)

THE MEANING OF BEING HUMAN

THE
MEANING OF BEING HUMAN
--BY PAUL TOURNIER (1898–1986)
That which man has received from God, that which makes him different
from the animals, his spirituality, his mind, his soul, whatever
name we give it, is not described in the Bible as a thing, a part
of man, a substance, but as a breath, a movement, an impulse,
an echo of God’s voice.
Genesis
1:26 -NLT
Then God said, "Let us make people in our image, to be like
ourselves. They will be masters over all life—the fish in
the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the livestock, wild animals,
and small animals."
Psalm
8:1-9 -NLT
O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and nursing infants
to give you praise.
They silence your enemies
who were seeking revenge.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you have set in place—
what are mortals that you should think of us,
mere humans that you should care for us?
For you made us only a little lower than God,
and you crowned us with glory and honor.
You put us in charge of everything you made,
giving us authority over all things—
the sheep and the cattle
and all the wild animals,
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that swims the ocean currents.
O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth!
