Shattered Glass is a cautionary tale. It warns us that even the most trusted institutions can be corrupted. It warns us that our lies and sins will catch up to us. It warns us that trying to hide or cover up those sins will only dig our pit deeper.
ON SWEET TALK AND DECEPTION
Our fine art of deception that we call finesse.
GLORIA GAITHER
You fool me once, shame on you. You fool me twice, shame on me.
CHINESE PROVERB
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.
--ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809–1865)
We are experts at deceiving others and ourselves too!
--ERWIN W. LUTZER
The Bible calls people to confess sins and repent. Watching Glass's life slowly coming unraveled, I was struck by how much confession and repentance were needed in his life. It was too late to salvage his career, but his life would never find healing without them.
ON CONFESSION
1 John 1:8-10 (NLT)
If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
Romans 10:9-11 (NLT)
For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, "Anyone who believes in him will not be disappointed."
