Joss Whedon has come full circle. He rose to fame (and fanboy deity status) by taking a failed vision of his movie and turning it into a television cult classic (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and now has taken a prematurely cancelled television series (Firefly) and turned it into a potential movie franchise with Serenity. Whedon deserved the benefit of the doubt, given his track record, not the ill treatment of airing episodes out of order, especially given his penchant for season-long story arcs. However, the movie has everything a fan could want from a science-fiction space opera: grand special effects, cool fight scenes, and dizzying space battles...

SERENITYFirefly fans should be pretty pleased with Serenity. Ordinary people should be, too. Writer-director Joss Whedon directs this film adaptation of his own sci-fi TV series with confidence and style, giving audiences more to cheer about in space since long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away.

But the movie is not just a retread of Firefly. In fact, many of the signature elements of the TV series have disappeared: the cowpies and cattle, for instance, and those mysterious men with the blue gloves. More importantly, Serenity fleshes out the universe and storyline of Firefly—and takes its characters to places the series has never gone before.

SERENITY“If you can’t do something smart…do something right.” This quote, from one of Serenity’s crew just about summarizes the story-line. Serenity, a space ship that travels the edges of the galaxy, is the container for a crew of veterans from the losing side of a galatic civil war, and the setting for a really great movie. This movie from the well known writer/directory Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire, Angel, and Firefly) is a magnificant story that interweaves suspence, drama, political commentary, and comedy into one big ball of fun and excitement.

SERENITYSerenity is a contradiction in terms: it’s the name of a ship on the run, named after a battle that continues to bring our heroes more war than peace, but represents the sole hope of humankind. This discrepancy represents this television series-turned-film as well: it’s a space western with a ‘new’ language of blended Old English and Chinese. The series was axed by its distributor but Joss Whedon’s love for it and the love of its fans brought it back. But the actual struggle between characters and within characters is what makes the movie (and the show) so sweet. Discounting the action, fight-choreography, and humor would be a dishonor to the movie because all those ingredients make this an entertaining ride, but the changing depth of the characters makes this a good one. Note: Some spoilers may occur!

Meet Mal (Nathan Fillion), the battle-scarred captain of said ship, who has faith in nothing but defends his crew to the death. Meet Mal’s motley crew of misfit space pirates, who grudgingly take on Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau) again and encounter more trouble from the government conglomerate, the Alliance, than they ever did during the war. Meet Shepherd Book (Ron Glass), the peace-preaching reverend who serves as an advisor to Mal…in addition to Mr. Universe (David Krumholtz), whose only companion is a remote-control female droid.

SERENITYNote: this review doesn’t reveal any of the good stuff so your enjoyment of the film reviewed won’t be spoiled

15.jpg (85 K)It’s hard to believe that a failed TV show could end up as an epic film that bests some of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, but that’s exactly what happens with Serenity. The film is based on the short-lived TV show Firefly, which was created Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon. However, despite its short life as a prime time TV show, Firefly developed an intensely loyal following. When the entire series was released on DVD, sales for the set went through the roof; and as we all know, if there’s one thing entertainment executives can’t ignore, it’s money. So the failed show known as Firefly was given new life on the big screen as Serenity, and let me just say that this film blows away any of the other sci-fi efforts from this past summer, even without Jedi or invading alien tripod machines. In fact, this movie was some of the most fun I’ve had at the movies this year.

CRASH and SERENITY

Jesus said, "Love your neighbor as yourself."
And who is my neighbor?
Thanks to two recent films, we are re-reminded of just whom we should love.
