An emotionally vulnerable, middle-aged London factory worker is stunned when the mixed-race daughter she gave up for adoption decades earlier tracks her down. The new addition proves to be a much needed tonic for her long-lost mum. Winner of Best Picture and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. Brenda Blethyn also won a Best Actress Golden Globe for her role as the surprised mother. Academy Awards Nominations: 5, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress--Brenda Blethyn, and Best Supporting Actress--Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
