SYNOPSIS
A deadly virus has been unleashed on the population of Raccoon City. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a terrifying adventure in survival horror.

Milla Jovovich (5th Element, Dummy) returns as Alice, one of only two survivors of the contained biochemical disaster in the first Resident Evil, the $100 million hit that serves as a prologue to the all-out action and horror of Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

The film begins where the first film left off, with Alice in the heart of the ravaged and deadly Raccoon City. She has been subjected to biogenetic experimentation by the vast Umbrella Corporation and become genetically altered, with super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if anyone is to remain alive.

Alice is joined by Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory – Time Machine, Helen of Troy), a recently demoted member of Umbrella Corp’s elite Special Tactics and Rescue Services (S.T.A.R.S.), Terri Morales (Sandrine Holt – Once a Thief, Happy Hour), Carlos Oliviera (Oded Fehr – The Mummy, Presidio Med), L.J. (Mike Epps – Next Friday, All About the Benjamins), and Nicholai (Zack Ward – Titus, Almost Famous) who must survive and escape what is quickly becoming a City of the Dead. To reach their goal, they will need to battle their way through the relentless onslaught of the ravenous undead, as well as Umbrella forces and terrifying bioengineered weapons, the most deadly of which is the colossal, heavily armed assassin, Nemesis.

Also featured in Resident Evil: Apocalypse are Thomas Kretschmann (U-571, 24, The Pianist), Jared Harris (I Shot Andy Warhol, Mr. Deeds) and Sophie Vavasseur (Evelyn).

VISUAL REVIEW

Click to enlargeTHE FILM IS ABOUT REGENERATION
The Umbrella Corporation is dedicated to helping people look younger. Unfortunately their experiments have gone awry. Instead of being the source of renewal and life, they have become the originators of a deadly virus that threatens to wipe out the human race. The virus regenerates people into the walking dead -- literally! The basis of the story reminds me of the Adam and Eve story, in which the couple wanted to live forever and ate of the forbidden fruit which brought death to the human culture.

The story opens with Alice emerging from a scientific laboratory table, as if she were being reborn on a delivery table -- except there is no mother. You might say she is virgin born. This is a scene very reminiscent of Alien Resurrection, in which Ripley is born anew at the beginning of that film. Here, Alice, like Ripley, is newborn naked. She wears only a swaddling cloth (towel) –- as Jesus did in his birth. There are many similarities to the Christ story in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. In fact, the Alice character is so closely related that she is what is known as a Christ-figure. Alice is born to be a savior!

She is born again, a clone of her former self. Resurrected in a new body that is capable of miraculous feats due to her new blood. Resident Evil 2 has a very similar starting point point
ALICE IS LIKE LEELOO  in Fifth Element

Being a Christ-figure is not new to Milla Jovovich. In Fifth Element she played Leeloo –- and the parallels between Christ and Leeloo were many. I was amazed by the similarities. In fact in Fifth Element she came "wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger" just as she does in Resident Evil 2.

We are introduced to the main characters in a church. They have taken on the holy task of saving those they can before the end comes. Our heroes are tracking down demonic creatures in this sacred building.

“These are real people in an unreal situation,” actor Oded Fehr (Carlos Olivera) says. “They’re surrounded by the most vicious and unfeeling enemies, and in some ways it’s their humanity that keeps them alive.”

There is a huge –- and I mean huge -- stained glass church window of Michael the archangel holding the scales of justice in his hands. The window is the centerpiece of the church. Suddenly Alice comes crashing through on her motorcycle. The connection between angel Michael and savior Alice could not be more obvious. In the Bible book of Revelation, Michael is the warring angel who defeats Satan in the end-time Apocalypse.

She is literally the all-knowing presence that is taking on the forces of darkness and death. She is the bringer of life and justice.

“Alice has survived the hideous experience in the Hive and emerged as a much more decisive character,” explains Jovovich. “She also has become an experiment of the Umbrella Corporation, a guinea pig in a sense, infected with the T-Virus. She doesn’t know what the consequences will be. All she knows is that through this experiment, Umbrella has unwittingly given her a weapon that she can use to take them on, and she is going to use it.”

As in the book of Revelation, there is a beast, sent by the destructive forces of evil. Alice must defeat him. Can you guess who will win? I cannot say because that will be spoiling the film. But, like duh, you know, don't you?

Click to enlargeTHE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
This is what our heroes are fighting to prevent. When people are infected by the virus, they turn into the walking dead. In the highly original film Night of the Living Dead (1968), writer/director George A. Romero gave us a vision of what it means to be spiritually dead that has had an unequaled cultural impact. His film has been remade several times, and its influence shows up even in films like this. In the Bible, to be disconnected from God is to be living but dead at the same time. The only hope, according to the Bible, is regeneration. But, wait isn't that the point of this film?

TWO RECENT FILMS PATTERED AFTER ROMERO'S CLASSIC:

DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004)  DVD release October 5, 2004.
Review by Mike Furches: "We see the important gatherings of the group taking place at a coffee shop called Hallowed Ground. It resembles, in some ways, what our churches can become. When a certain character and his loved one find reason to stay away from the Hallowed Ground, those individuals become isolated, ...all is not safe at the Crossroads..."

Review by Mike Furches and David Bruce:Cycle courier Jim awakes from a coma in the deserted intensive care unit of a London hospital. Mystified, he wanders the wards and corridors in search of others and eventually heads into the city streets, calling out for help. As the shadows lengthen Jim seeks shelter in a church only to find dead bodies piled in heaps on the chapel floor.

Click to enlargeAS YOU MIGHT GUESS
In order to be a "true" Christ-figure, Alice must have a death and resurrection scene. And she does. She dies at the hands of the enemy, but is soon regenerated. The symbolism of birth (rebirth) through water is used here (e.g., baptism, embryonic birth waters) She emerges to finally conquer the deadly virus that threatens humanity. Oops, was that a spoiler? Naw, you knew the end from the beginning, didn't you?

Oh, my gosh, we are saved! Or, are we? Wait, what were those last words spoken in the film? Hmm, we have been set up for Resident Evil 3.
