As I watched this long awaited film version of the Tony Award winning musical "Rent", a war was going on within my soul. There were 2 different audiences within me, and both were watching the same film. Each one saw many different things. The conservative Christian in me saw a film that ripe with wanton sexuality, graphic depiction of both male and female homosexuality, drug addiction, identity crises, flat out rebellion and chaos. The more I watched, the more I began to squirm with discomfort and uneasiness. I could easily take the sin-hunting route and declare the film as a celebration of immorality; something created by “Blue-state” residing, liberal-minded Hollywood as yet another attempt to disregard the principles of God in favor of soulless debauchery.

But, the more I watched, I remembered my own sins and my own immorality. The more I watched, the more I saw myself. The more I saw myself, the easier it was for me to drop my sword of judgment. I was able to see the film for what it really was: a depiction and celebration of life. Not the rose-colored, “Red-state” driven, Biblically mandated ideal of what life should be; but, instead, this film is a depiction of real American life in the 21st century.

Musical theater and film musicals are curious pieces of entertainment. Just think about it. People dancing and singing all day long? It just isn’t normal. Not normal to burst out in song in the middle of conversation. Not normal to begin dancing when there is not a band, a club, or even a stereo anywhere nearby. And most of all, not normal to publicly express the depth of emotions, thoughts, questions, and confessions that are often confidently and loudly shared in the songs of musicals.

In the last ten years, one of the most talked about Broadway musicals has been Rent. It won the Tony award for Best Musical in 1996 and has been performed in NYC and around the country since then. It is also not your grandma’s musical.

The first time I went to see Rent on Broadway, I left with a sense of awe. I was not sure what that awe was from, whether the music, the story, the acting, the theater, whatever it was, I was not sure. But what I did know was that there was something powerful and that in some way Rent is a picture of all that is good about art.

Because of this, you would think that I would be very excited that Rent was coming to the big screen. And although I could not wait to go and see it, there was some hesitation, that somehow the movie would not capture the power that the Broadway show brought. And, about 30 minutes into the movie, that is how I felt. However, starting with the song "Tango Maureen," this all began to change.
