THE
PRINCESS DIARIES
The film combines both free will and predestination in a very interesting
way. MIA becomes a princess by her choice (free will) and because
of her birth (predestination).

SYNOPSIS:
Shy
San Francisco teenager MIA Thermopolis (ANNE HATHAWAY) is thrown for
a loop when, from out of the blue, she learns the astonishing news
that she's a real-life princess! As the heir apparent to the crown
of the small European principality of Genovia, MIA begins a comical
journey toward the throne when her strict and formidable grandmother,
Queen Clarisse Renaldi (JULIE ANDREWS), shows up to give her "princess
lessons." The two instantly clash -- MIA has no intention of leaving
her normal life to become the ruler of a far-off country, while her
grandmother insists it is her duty. Clarisse is determined to do a
complete makeover of this sparkling -- if not polished -- diamond
in the rough so that she can take her rightful place in the royal
line of succession. Now the reluctant princess must make the biggest
decision of her life -- whether to remain with her family and explore
a budding romance with her best friend's brother Michael (ROBERT SCHWARTZMAN),
or to leave everything behind to accept the royal responsibilities
that come with being the Princess of Genovia. |

BORN
A CHILD OF GOD
There are some real theological issues in this film. The film begins
with a shy San Francisco teenager, MIA Thermopolis, who is totally
unaware of her noble birth. She is unaware of her birthright.
|
NOTHING
EXTRAORDINARY
She sees nothing special about her self. She is a good student et
al, but she sees herself only as a "plain Jane" type. The
fact that she is a child of a king never crosses her mind. |
INVISIBLE
PERSON
She is just one of the millions of invisible people in the world who
go about their daily lives and think nothing of their "higher
purpose" or their "true calling." |
THE
BEARER OF GOOD NEWS
Enter Mia's strict and formidable grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi,
as the "ambassador of good news" telling her of her noble
birth and her glorious future. The grandmother also represents the
way of the law (appearances). But all the training and good works
will not make Mia the princess she was born to be. |
THE
TRANSFORMATION BEGINS
In order to be a princess, Mia must do more than act like a princess.
Actually, the story makes it clear that MIA must also decide to be
the princess she was born to be. Even though she was born a princess/child
of the king/God, she must also claim/decide to be so. |

|
COMBINING
FREE WILL AND DESTINY
The film combines both free will and predestination in a very interesting
way. MIA becomes a princess by her choice (free will) and because
of her birth (predestination). |
|
|
BECOMING
A CHILD OF GOD
And so it is with all humans. We are all born by the will of God (God's
offspring), but we must also decide for that relationship with the
Heavenly Father, just as Mia did for her earthly father. |
