LYNN REDGRAVE'S SECRETS

Feature Article by

Pastor and Tolkien Scholar.

Greg Wright has written a book on the mythology of J.R.R. Tolkien and has degrees in Theology, English Literature and Computer Science.

Over the course of her career, Lynn Redgrave has distinguished herself in any number of ways. For me, however, redgrave01.jpg - 37604 Byteswhat has set her apart from other actors is her uncanny ability to consistently convey the impression that her character knows something that the characters around her don't. In Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, Redgrave attributed this effect to advice given her by her father, Sir Michael Redgrave. The character an actor plays must always have a secret, he said, because real people have secrets. Character secrets bring a performance to life.

So what secrets about Peter Pan did Redgrave have to share?

"I don't know that they've ever really been the villains in the original Barrie... Mrs. Darling is the loveliest mom -- she's just a caring, loving, wonderful mom. And now, of course, embodied by Olivia, she's like everybody would want that -- want Olivia for a mom. And Mr. Darling, he's like so many British men, I have to say: you know, they're held back by their inability to express themselves in a way that they should. Aunt Millicent, of course, who is not a Barrie character, but a P.J.-written character, she's a mixture of such romance, in a way, in that she's the one who sees womanhood approaching -- not mom and dad -- and yet at the same time cares dreadfully about the neighbors. So she's typical of her time, and yet a true romantic. I loved being Millicent. I don't think any of them were villains. I didn't look on them as villains."

"To me, the musical is another aspect; Hook was another aspect; the animated [version] -- fabulous, but totally different. I didn't consider that Peter Pan, on the screen, had been done. I think P.J. is Peter Pan, and [producer] Jocelyn [Moorhouse] is Wendy, and that's what made them able to make this extraordinary film. P.J. is the most wonderful Peter Pan. . P.J. is so much fun to film with!"

redgrave04.jpg - 35905 BytesOn the Dark Side of Peter Pan

"It's good to see the dark side of the story. I think there are some extraordinarily intense moments in the movie. When they get to Neverland and the pirates, and that. Some of it is just quite scary and quite goes to one's primal fears, really -- including walking the plank and going off into oblivion, into the cold, cold ocean. And that's why I think it will surprise people. And a lot of that is because the musical absolutely does not deal in any way with the dark side. And so since most American audiences are absolutely familiar with the musical -- I mean, even if they didn't see Mary Martin or Sandy Duncan or Cathy Rigby, they were wonderful -- but the musical takes away all the dark side, there is no dark side. And the dark side is very much a part of Barrie. It's great to see adult fare like that. I think it's also a movie for adults; I don't think you've got to have a kid in the family, or a friend to drag along to it. It's an adult movie, as well as a kid movie. It's that particular magical combination."
