Set in the exotic world of Cuba in the late 1800s, Original Sin is
a sexy, suspenseful thriller about the dangerous and sometimes lethal
power of love. Luis Antonio Vargas (Antonio Banderas) is a wealthy
coffee merchant who has decided to take an American wife. When he
arrives at the docks to meet Julia Russell (Angelina Jolie), he is
surprised to find that she is not the plain woman he was expecting.
Happier than he ever imagined, he and his new bride embark on a new
life. But the surprises continue until the story takes a fateful turn.

INTERVIEW:
Q: What appealed to you about the ORIGINAL SIN script?
JOLIE:
Michael Cristofer's [the Writer/Director] name on it [laughs]. I
would do just about anything Michael wrote. I know the things that
he cares about, the things he wants to say. It's all about freedom
and love, being alive, struggling with ourselves and learning to
love ourselves. It is all these things and it is also just great
sexuality. I've never done a complete nude scene or love scene or
half of the things that I've done in this film. I wouldn't do them
if it wasn't with Michael. He sees them just right and understands
my sexuality.
Q:
What was your experience working with Angelina Jolie?
BANDERAS:
She's a very daring actress. She is a person who lives the character
more than act or perform and is a very generous actress to work
with. She gives you a lot and she changes all the time. I have done
with her four or five takes of one scene and and she may change
completely from one side to the other. It has been a wonderful experience
working with Angelina Jolie, probably one of the most beautiful
experiences that I have had with an actress in my life. In fact,
we are searching for a possible new movie to do together because
this has been a very pleasant experience. Now the results, [laughs]
that's something that we have to see in the movie theaters.

HEALING
POWER OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Subject: Original
Sin
Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001
From: "Mike B"
Original
Sin" is a film about the effects of abuse on a person's life (Julia/Bonnie)
and about the healing power of unconditional love. After recognizing
that sexual abuse had damaged Julia/Bonnie from a young age, I remembered
theologian Rita Brock's definition of sin: "Sin emerges because
our relationships have the capacity to destroy us and we participate
in destruction when we seek to destroy ourselves and others. Hence
sin is a sign of our brokenheartedness, of how damaged we are, not
of how evil, willfully disobedient, and culpable we are. Sin is
not something to be punished, but something to be healed." Julia/Bonnie's
healing process began as Louis loves her without condition, and
made evident when he tells her he doesn't love her as Julia nor
as Bonnie, but for the person she is. As she cradles him in her
arms toward's the story's end, she is able to speak her genuine
love for him.
