OCEAN'S
ELEVEN
Ocean's
Eleven is a lot like another Soderbergh film that I love, Out
of Sight, inasmuch as it stars George Clooney, involves a big
score, has great dialogue (and great actors to deliver said dialogue-Clooney
is especially charming and witty in each), and a protagonist willing
to risk it all for a girl.

| Ocean's
Eleven is a lot like another Soderbergh film that I love, Out of Sight,
inasmuch as it stars George Clooney, involves a big score, has great
dialogue (and great actors to deliver said dialogue-Clooney is especially
charming and witty in each), and a protagonist willing to risk it
all for a girl. |
Clooney
is perfect in both, and both films have a tremendous supporting cast:
Out of Sight featured Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle and
the always funny Steve Zhan; while Ocean's Eleven boasts stars like
Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and, again, Don Cheadle, amongst
others. I have to admit I'm not a fan of Julia Roberts though. And
the chemistry between her and Clooney didn't quite compare to that
of Clooney and Lopez, but oh well. Both films are fun. And only with
a cast like this can a guy like Matt Damon play the quiet, nerdy type. |
In
both films Clooney is a convict: in Out of Sight he escapes from prison,
whereas here is a parolee. And immediately after he gets out of prison
he begins planning the big score: take down three Vegas casinos. But
of course, he'll need a crew. The first on board is Ocean's pal Dusty
Ryan (Pitt), who is currently teaching Hollywood actors how to play
cards. The two then assemble a group of 'proper villains,' as Cheadle's
character puts it, consisting of a pick pocket, a computer wiz, a
gymnast, a Cockney, and so on. |
Once
this bunch of criminals is put together, Danny Ocean goes over the
blueprints, how to take down the casinos. During this scene there's
some really funny dialogue, notably between Clooney and Carl Reiner's
character Saul Bloom. Clooney details the incredibly complex and high-tech
security system of the vault that joins the three casinos, and after
explaining this Bloom asks if after stealing $150 million from this
impenetrable vault they're just gonna walk out with the cash. Clooney
nonchalantly says, "Yeah," and Reiner responds, "Oh," as if it was
a dumb question. |
|
We
later discover that the three casinos belong to Clooney's ex-wife's
new lover Harry Benedict (Andy Garcia). And while, as I previously
mentioned, Clooney and Roberts don't have the same chemistry as
Clooney and Lopez did, they do have some humorous exchanges. Here's
an example:
Roberts:
"You're a thief and a liar."
Clooney:
"I only lied about being a thief? besides I don't do that anymore."
Roberts:
"What, steal?"
Clooney:
"No, lie."
|
| Once
Robert's character is introduced we see that Danny Ocean doesn't care
about the money; it's all about the girl. But it's not the way it
seems. At first it seems as though he's doing it out of spite, to
get revenge on Benedict. But we later realize that he's in love with
Tess and has her best interests in mind: Ocean seems selfish at first
but we later discover that he's quite selfless. |
|
In
both Ocean's Eleven and Out of Sight Clooney risks his life for
the one he loves: in Out of Sight he takes a bullet for Lopez and
in Ocean's Eleven he returns to prison for Roberts. In both films
Clooney's character goes against our preconceived notions of a criminal
to show us that people are often much different than we think. In
both, Clooney plays a criminal capable of incredible acts of kindness.

David,
hey I was just wondering if you had a review out for the movie "Ocean's
Eleven". I had recently watched the movie, and I particularly like
your reviews of films. Sadly, i could not find a review on this
one. It seems it is connected with Queen of the damned. maybe you
could look into that for me.
Thanks. Steve Hubbard
Response
