HJ SPINS LIES INTO TRUTH
August 28, 1999. Dave, Excuse me, but I have a profoundly different view of spirituality than you apparently do. I believe that true spirituality can only be found through Jesus Christ, not just a lame attempt to put a spiritual spin on obviously immoral acts. If you intend to defend such immoral acts on your site, please do Jesus and Christians everywhere a favor and delete His name from your title. In case you are wondering, I am not and do not claim to be perfect. I am, however, someone who is completely tired of people spinning a lie into a truth. Think about it. -Marc
My response: Well, Marc, I don't believe I defend immoral acts. It seems to me that you are reading too much into my review.
THE PRE-MARITAL SEX CRASHES AND BURNS
June 20, 1999. The saving grace of this film is that the pre-marital sex crashes-and-burns. But, I also thought that a very quick 3 minute edit would make this film rather PG... I was disappointed that the makers of this film didn't realize that they could have just had the two characters spend the night *talking* or holding hands or other forms of intimacy that didn't include sex, and the plot of the film would still work. In fact, it would take a great ironic twist! The next morning when the reporters and cameras spot Julia Robert's character at a man's house, the media would assume the worst (that they slept together) and would still reek havoc on her life regardless. It would show how ruthless media can be and the plot could continue on the same path. Laura Isabella
SERENDIPITY CAN ENTER OUR LIFE ANY TIME
June 11, 1999. Notting Hill was a delightful example of how serendipity can enter our life at any given moment. The question for everyone is "will you be ready when it happens?" In a world where miracles are suspect (at best), Notting Hill gives us pause to reflect on the possibility that this can happen. The supporting characters are wonderfully "real," and the way in which Anna is accepted into the community is delightful. The treasure of "friendship" and "love" is shown to be more valuable than celebrity. In fact, peace only comes when Anna has totally surrendered to love and commits herself to the relationship. Alfred
