1. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE OSCARS?
*************************

Ken Priebe, one of the reviewers at Hollywood Jesus, had these comments about the Academy Awards. I thought his remarks would make a great spring board for discussion. Let me know your thought of the Oscars this year.

Side note: I thought it was interesting that it was held on Palm Sunday and that it was finally back in Hollywood. -David Bruce

Overall, what a great ceremony! Much better than last year's. It was well written, and the film montages were outstanding.

I loved the comment "in most movies, the director is God, but in documentaries, God is the director." Cirque de Soliel was very innovative and amazing, even though we couldn't see all the film clips on the screen behind them.

I'm very happy for the winning actors; Jennifer Connelly I've loved since "Labyrinth", Halle Berry's moment is going down in history, and Denzel Washington is number one on my list right now. I was thrilled to find out he had been to church earlier that day, and loved that the first words out of his mouth upon winning were "God is good! God is great!" I wish more winners would thank God; it makes me wonder if they forget in the heat of the moment or if they simply don't know Him. I pray for all of these talented celebrities and hope they aren't so caught up in their fame they have shut God out of their lives, because they have enriched ours with their work. I hope they realize that all good things come from God, and not always from themselves.

I have to vent now about my biggest disappointment of the evening, one which I was kind of expecting but hoping against, and that was "Shrek" as best animated feature. My wife and I feel like we are the only people in the world who didn't like that movie. It may have its moments, but overall it's a completely overrated crappy film. We're animators and artists ourselves, so we tend to nitpick animation to death, and I'll spare all the details, but the animation wasn't even very good. Some of it was impressive, but not nearly as impressive as "Monsters Inc." All I really saw in "Shrek" was Jeffrey Katzenberg ridiculing the very company he brought back from the ashes, characters bickering at each other, stupid jokes, cliché gags, a donkey that wouldn't shut up, and a lame ending that may have a good message, but it's been done before. Whereas...in "Monsters Inc." I saw outstanding animation and lovable characters, breakthrough technology in Sully's realistic hair movement, drama, comedy, a clever Looney Tunes homage, an old-fashioned UPA-style title sequence, a Hitchcock-like chase scene and storyline, a brilliant hybrid of the old and the new. It's a tribute to what film and animation have offered us for a century, and shows that people still remember; a true FILM made by FILMMAKERS, some of the best in the business. There was no contest in my opinion. I'm just so sick of hearing about how great "Shrek" is, and now there's a sequel in the works; just pouring some more lemon juice into the wound.

The fact that "For the Birds" won best animated short and Randy Newman got an award that was way overdue softened the blow a bit, and much of the rest of the ceremony calmed me down a bit, but I'm still disappointed.

On top of that, the way the category was presented seemed a bit of an afterthought. For starters, they did the usual Hollywood thing of talking about the voice actors and not even acknowledging the animators and artists. I love voice actors and the people who do it (I've done a bit myself), but what about the visual artists who bring their characters to life? Even some shots of them working would have been a nice touch. Also, there were so many wonderful film montages paying tribute to past work in other categories, and with animated features being a new category, I was disappointed they didn't do a retrospective on them. After thinking about it, I realized it may have been because up until the past 30 years or so, most of them were done by Disney, so it would have been a bit one-sided, and most non-Disney features have not been recognized by the academy. But still, it would have been nice to at least do a thing on how Walt got the ball rolling with "Snow White" in 1937. Oh well, I'll get over it.

Anyway, enough of my rant. I am passionate about animation and its history, and sometimes I just wish it was presented with more respect.

God Bless,
Ken Priebe

3. NEW MONTHLY LORD OF THE RINGS FEATURE
*************************
Greg Wright has started a new monthly feature at Hollywood Jesus. He has already posted two features. Here they are:

Elrond and Peter Jackson's Aragorn
-Analysis by Greg Wright
Jackson has elected to remove the certainty of Aragorn's fate with a Modern's personification of self doubt. And he has done this because he sees Aragorn as the central character of The Lord of the Rings: the third installment is called, after all, "The Return of the King." For Tolkien, Aragorn is heroic because he is a Hero. For Jackson, Aragorn is a hero because he becomes one.

Peter Jackson's Arwen
-Analysis by Greg Wright
There is not a doubt that Peter Jackson appreciates the significance of the role that Arwen plays in Tolkien's fiction.  The vision of loveliness, strength and nobility that Tyler brings to the screen as Jackson's version of Arwen can leave the viewer no doubt as to the identity of the Evenstar of the Elves. But Jackson has stronger ideas in store for Arwen than even Tolkien intended.

Christian influence at the Grammy's
Subject: Newsletter_33
Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002
From: "Wenger, Kim"

What a great newsletter! I wanted to add a comment about the Grammy awards. I watched the entire show this year and was amazed to see it open with a song by U2 which ended with "Halle, halle, hallelujah" and Bono with his arms raised, inviting the audience to join in. Bono also mentioned the influence of gospel music on their recent album (and work in general) when accepting one of the group's several awards that night. Then to see the show end with Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, two church choirs, and a host of well-known gospel singers - I was blown away! It seems that even the secular music industry recognizes the effect gospel music and Christ are having on their music and honored it. Quite a different story from the Grammy's last year when Elton John and Eminem did a song together...

OSCARS
Subject: oscars
Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002
From: Apri

Mr Bruce,
thanks for all your interesting newsletters. I have tried for 3 times to send my responding to the article on the oscar views but got it 3 times back. Now I'm trying to send the response through this e-adress.

It was the first time I saw the whole 4 hours broadcast on tv. Well, actually I taped it, because it was 2 AM here in Holland and to sit and watch till 6 AM is a bit to much to ask. It was live on the BBC. It was a great show, but I can't deny the fact that there are some big egos going around what makes it a bit fake and hypocrit.

To my opinion there were lots of surprises. Such as Halle Berry for "Monster's Ball'. I would give the Oscar to Nicole Kidman or Sissy Spacek.

Was it perhaps a political statement to give oscars to black actors? Denzel Washington is a great actor, but he performed much better in other of his films. And (in the past) what about Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson or Danny Glover? Some way or another I think many times the oscars are not given always to the best performances. Look at Paul Newman some years ago; he won an oscar for 'Color of money' or Judi Dench for 'Shakespeare in love'. It wasn't there best roles. Another surprise was Jim Broadbent. I thought Ben Kingsley was much better in 'Sexy beast'.

In the category adapted screenplay the oscar should go to 'Lord of the rings' because the book is very difficult to film and I think the makers did a great job with the screenplay.

'A beautiful mind' was a great movie, but the screenplay was not quite based on the tru life of the real John Nash. Many things about his marriage, sex escapades, emotions were not mentioned in the movie. So this screenplay didn't deserve the oscar.

I like 'A beautiful mind' very much, but I think the movie was made to win oscars. Everything has been planned to win the symphaty of the academy. Past editions have proved that the academy loves such (political) correct movies. Everybody should also have guessed that after 16 nominees Randy Newman could win the Oscar. This was another proof that the best performance (song) doesn't always win. Sting, Enya or Paul McCartney had much better songs. Political correct (regarding 9/11) was also the oscar for 'No man's land'. Great movie, but Amelie deserved the Oscar. Funny detail was the oscar for 'Pearl Harbor' and 2 other nominees while it had also several nominees for the 'razzies'. I think it was a shame that Bazz Lorman wasn't nominated for best director and the song by Kidman/McGregor wasn't nominated either.

I agree with Ken about nobody thanking God accept Denzel. Every years it makes me sad to see that. God is the Great Inspiror and the Greatest Artist there is, but all those big egos don't recognised it.

It amazes me also every year how ugly many dresses are (made by famous designers). The Oscar fore most worse dress goes this year to Gwyneth Paltrow; my God, doesn't she has eyes on her face (God bless her tough)? Cameron Diaz deserved also a special award: most frustrated hair. An award for best appearance: Nicole Kidman (and award for biggest mistake of the year: Tom Cruise for leaving Nicole Kidman).

I agree again with Ken, let's all pray for Hollywood, because indeed God has given them the gift to give people a good time. I pray that the Lord touches their hearts so Hollywood can see how awsome God is.
God bless,
Arpi

You Could Honestly Say That This Was The Worst Oscars In History
Subject: My_views_of_the_Oscars
Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002
From: Blake C.

The only good things to happen at this years Oscars was that of Ron Howard, all Beautiful Mind, all Lord of the Rings and Shrek awards. The rest was liberal sided agenda, plus being loosely held together by the black female lesbian, Whoopi Goldberg. The ratings even showed that this was the worst year in a loooonnnnngggg time. Why can't we stay with the actually funny hosts like Bob Hope and Billy Crystal, instead of playing the feminist color card. The fact that both the best actor/actress awards were black people is appalling. Halle Berry won over Judi Dench??? Judi Dench would have won if only she was black. I had to shut off the tv for five minutes so i didn't have to see Halle's ranting and fake crying. Don't get me wrong Denzel is an excellent actor but he won for a movie where he glorified spitting in God's face every other word, it kind of kills the whole "God is good. God is great." comment huh? Sean Penn deserved this years, because he represented a retarded man (which he convincingly plays) trying to keep his daughter and he stands for doing the right thing and that little virtue of HONESTY. But apparently that was not good compared to the God slandering Training Day. The happiest point of the Oscars was when Ron Howard, who actually deserved the Oscar, got up and spoke from his heart without fake crying and theatrics. Lord of the Rings made a good showing also, which i was very glad, yet i still think that Ian McKellan should have won best supp. actor, even though i was recently informed that he is blatantly gay. I was so happy when Shrek won, because that movie showed all of the hypocrisy Disney has ever stood for and it took guts to bring it out in the open. So anyways that is a review from an 18 year old Texan. If any of you want to disregard my review of the Oscars because of my age, that is fine but very very lame. I am a conservative Christian and I have a hard time with people who give the minority special privileges when in fact they don't deserve them. I am free to discussion, email me back if you want to. Thank you for your time.

Best Movie - thumbs down

Hi
As usual Americans couldn't see past their noses. Peter Jackson should have got best director and LOTR best picture. Beautiful Mind would not have needed any where near the skill to make that Peter Jackson needed for LOTR's.

The standing ovation Woody Allen received was nothing more than a horrible example of how degenerate the movie industry has sunk. To give this man, who basically raped and then married his stepdaughter, any sort of honor is just beyond belief.

Tom Cruise comment how we need Hollywood now is way off the mark. If anything, we need Christ now more than ever.

We need the courage to stand as lights in the darkness.

FYI...Denzel Washington and his family regularly attend church at West Angeles Church of God In Christ in Los Angeles. The pastor is Bishop Charles Blake. Magic Johnson, Stevie Wonder and Angela Bassett are among the other "superstars" who attend this church regularly.

A lot of people don't know that many actors are Christians and attend worship services with their families. But they do. Just thought you'd like to know.

THE ONE WITH THE SHREK
Subject: My_views_of_the_Oscars

From: andy

Hello Ken :)

I read your review about the oscars. I especially love your comment about animated features. Why, I love animation to death as well, only that I'm still a newbie. Will go there.

I personally love Monsters inc than Shrek. (I bought the used Shrek dvd from blockbuster heh heh:) But I sure will get a brand new factory sealed Monsters dvd when it comes out!) Weird, but that's me :D

But somehow I knew that Shrek would grab the Oscar. I think... Monsters is very innovative (as usual for Pixar), it actually has a great story and touching drama. But it was not that "solid" I really did find myself kinda bored and dissapointed at about 1/3 of the movie. I thought "Omigosh, I hope Pixar won't experience the Disney problem thing" But then. Nope. The movie rocks! >From the 2/3 to the end was WOW! The pace, humor, drama are alot more gripping. I think I cried a little bit when Sulley hugged Boo and there were tears in his eyes. GREAT ACTING!

I agree with you, why animators don't get credits? They sweat blood and tears to get it there. They are actors too, well, the phisical part. I am thinking they should put like "animated by The Walt Disney Studio" or stuffs like that on the movie posters. Right along side...ummm...whaddya call it...those lean writings on the posters with the music by...lyrics by...directed by...? Funny the composer and lyricist got mentioned in the poster but the animators not. Well, I may be wrong in this. What do you think?

While Shrek is like you said, nothing "new" But I think Shrek is solid. A rather usual story compared to monsters but well told. All pieces just in the right place. And the phsycology is somewhat closer to us, a nobody who is finding his true self and victory. I think that's why the academy chose Shrek.

Monsters technical, especially Sulley's fur and the animation quality surely do surpass the other two nominee. But may be they wish to award that in "Best special effect for animation" category? Next year? Well, the good news is and I really thank God that finally there is "Best animated feature" category. Wohooo!!!

So in my humble opinion,

Monsters inc is very creative, touching and great animation effects.

Shrek is an animated story about an unlikely hero which is well told and solid. I'm done. :)

Hey, I may be wrong.
What do you think?

God's blessing be with you,
Andy Mulia

BURN IN HELL, YOU WORKER OF INIQUITY
Subject: My_views_of_the_Oscars
Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002
From: "Steve Chalet"

Its all basically the work of Satan ... if you don't believe that...you are deceived. Come on... let's get really honest .... the Apostle Paul ... a great Jewish believer (Rabbi too) would NEVER have anything to do with all the Hollywood 'circuses'. "Hollywood Jesus" itself is a blight on the beautiful name of the Messiah Yeshua-Jesus. But don't worry ... He is coming ... for His own... soon

Most of the actors who love 'the praise of men' and the idolatry of the 'OSCAR' itself .... will be cast into the LAKE OF FIRE .... remember 'Hollywood Jesus'... " many will say in that day...LORD LORD did we not do this....and this... and that... in your name? And HE WILL SAY... DEPART FROM ME YE WORKERS OF INIQUITY INTO everlasting FIRE .....'

Hollywood Jesus .... examine yourself... whether YE BE IN THE FAITH.

Response: Thanks for the slam. The way you exude the love and compassion of God is so refreshing to me. Read Acts 17:16-34 for Paul's take on culture and how he used it. -Warmly in the love of Christ, David
