Read Elisabeth Leitch's article about the cast's views on "happily ever after":
"I think there is a true love," says Patrick Dempsey who plays real world divorce lawyer Robert. "I think there is a connection you find with someone. But I think it comes with a tremendous amount of work, and understanding, and sacrifice."

Long-time Contributor Makes a Move

HJ's movie coverage has long focused on the films people are actually watching, regardless of advance studio hype and armchair prognostications -- and that emphasis on the cinematic zeitgeist will always be HJ's bread and butter.

But in a move designed to enhance HJ's opening-day coverage of theatrical releases, Hollywood Jesus has hired Elisabeth Leitch on a part-time basis to assist Managing Editors Greg and Jenn Wright with publicist relations and editorial flow in the flagship Movies Department.

Elisabeth has written for Hollywood Jesus since August of 2004; she now works in the Bay Area, having recently moved there from New Mexico. With the skills and interests that she brings to the table, HJ aims to consistently offer informed opening-day opinions about spiritual content in movies. She'll coordinate with HJ's other opening-day movie reviewers (like Yo, Darrel and Tim) to keep on top of everything Hollywood can dish out.

Expect to see a lot more of Elisabeth's insightful work.

Elisabeth is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a BA in Literature-Writing.

David HeadshotAll Are Welcome; Why Not?
Why We Are In Love With Enemies

Jesus was revolutionary. He loved those he was not supposed to. From its beginning in 1997, Hollywood Jesus has followed this principle of loving and welcoming both friend and foe. It seems to us that there is too much hatred and bitterness in the world, hatred that divides us. Love is a better path. It is the road less traveled.

Hollywood Jesus uses pop culture as common connecting ground. Jesus used his masterful storytelling ability to connect and transform others. We follow this example, although imperfectly; we do strive to do our best.

From day one Hollywood Jesus has been known for its welcome mat that reads:

Everyone Welcome. Hindus, Jews, Christians, Wiccans, Muslims, New Agers, Atheists, Agnostics, Gay and Straight. Come in.

Here is the reason why...

The Week in Movies

Redacted
They Just Watch and Don't Do Nothing
Darrel Manson | 11/17/07
De Palma is certainly upfront about his motives for the film and what he wants the viewer to take away from the experience. This film certainly couldn't be described as pro-military or pro-American.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Becoming Like Children
Tim Berroth
 | 11/16/07
Even the stiff-collared Weston is able to let go and "see" the magic. The need to be grown up and mature is not always the path to knowing our Creator more intimately. "Unless you become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

What Would Jesus Buy?
The Shopocalypse Is Coming!
Darrel Manson
 | 11/16/07
The street theater of The Church of Stop Shopping would warm the heart of Hebrew prophets such as Jeremiah or Hosea, and his message would resonate with those ancient prophets as well as with Jesus and his followers in scripture.

Beowulf
The Conquering Hero
Tim Berroth
 | 11/16/07
The desire and, yes, the necessity for a conquering hero to destroy the forces of darkness resonates within us all as we see the world's ills. Our spirits soar when we see the bravery of one who is willing to sacrifice even himself for the sake of the many.

Beowulf
Hero vs Coward
Yo
 | 11/16/07
Beowulf is an amazing film visually, but pride truly is the curse not only of the hero but of the film. In trying to define heroism, it only reveals how desperate we are for a hero to come and save us from our own pride.

No Country For Old Men
The Dismal Tide
Tim Berroth
 | 11/16/07
Echoing the words of Solomon the Preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes, rugged Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (a name almost as good as the actor who portrays him: Tommy Lee Jones) studies the barren landscape of Texas and finds nothing but hopelessness.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
A Robbery (and Lives) Go Sour
Darrel Manson
 | 11/11/07
Slow destruction is what is going on in this film. It's not just the robbery that has gone bad, it is their spiritual lives that spoil bit by bit. The film succeeds so well in destroying these characters that I really didn't much care what happened to them.

DVDs, Music, and Games

Flywheel
Low Budget, Big Heart
Greg Wright
 | 11/13/07 | On DVD
Here, the main issue is a father's desperate need for his son's and wife's respect, and Kendrick nails it. Sure, the the film drags a little bit in its final third as the blessings from God just seem to pigpile on the Austins. Still, it all rings true to the faith experience.

Home of the Brave
Support for Troops?
Mike Furches
 | 11/13/07 | On DVD
It is easy to look at the headlines of the war in Iraq, or any war for that matter, and not think of the long term consequences of war. The consequences do not end on the battlefield, but often continue in the battlefield of life.

Commando: Director's Cut
Arnold Comes of Another Age
Ed Travis
 | 11/13/07 | On DVD
If nothing else, Commando is a time capsule for a different era in our country, in our movies, and in our spirituality. There was a time when the willing masses believed that a huge, hulking brute of a man could save the day.

Day Watch
Science Fiction for Postmoderns
Ed Travis
 | 11/13/07 | On DVD
In a sense Night Watch and Day Watch are the ultimate examples of postmodern science fiction. Good and evil aren't so much eternal enemies locked in battle as wanderers down the same path of supernatural life.

So They Say
Life In Surveillance
Jacob Sahms | 11/16/07 | Music
They're not too hard and not too soft, but my overall assessment is that "stuck in the middle" isn't necessarily a good thing. It's not a bad album, but it certainly wasn't my cup of tea. Fearless seems to be broadening their artist list, though, and that's a good thing.

Glorious Unseen
Tonight The Stars Speak
Jacob Sahms
 | 11/14/07 | Music
The Glorious Unseen, or Ben Crist and company, rocks the band's worship album Tonight The Stars Speak with flair, style, and most importantly, substance. Crist is onto something here, and repeated listens may find me humming along.

A Step Behind
This Is What We've Become
Jacob Sahms
 | 11/13/07 | Music
A Step Behind's latest hit stores November 6th, rocking their Texas-influenced rock for all the world to see. They had success to the tune of 10,000 copies sold of their debut album, but three years later, their sights are set even higher with this EP.

Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Is Still The Best
Yo
 | 11/15/07 | Games
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games this year, and by far the number one reason to own a Nintedo Wii. From graphics to controls, every detail of this game is top notch. Go get this game.

Zack And Wiki: Quest For Barbaros' Treasure
All To Wiki I Surrender
Dice
 | 11/13/07 | Games
Put simply ZW:QFBT is fun. The puzzle design, the sense of humor, even the innovative use of Wii motion controls, all combine for one of the most enjoyable and fresh gaming experiences I've had in a while.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Fake Guitar is So Much Cooler...
Deez
 | 11/12/07 | Games
If you wish you were a rock star you really can't go wrong with Guitar Hero III. Obviously, there's some spiritual content with the final battle, and there's several heavy metal songs that contain questionable lyrics.
