Hollywood Jesus Turns 10! The Call Came from Billy Graham
At
a San Jose rally in September of 2007, the evangelist Billy Graham
challenged the pastors present to reclaim the Internet for Christ -- to
make it, in our generation, what the Gutenberg Press was in its day: a
powerful force for the Gospel.
In response to that call, David Bruce
-- then pastoring a congregation in California -- put on his thinking
cap. "A few days
later," he says, "I began planning a website to review pop culture from a
Christian perspective and use those reviews as a springboard to the
gospel. I took
a crash course in creating websites, and Hollywood Jesus launched in
late 1997."
The domain name was registered on October 29, and HJ's
first web pages went up the following January. The site now features a
staff of eight editors and over fifty volunteer contributors and has
published over a thousand articles in the last six months alone.
What
has the journey been like for David? "The popularity of Hollywood Jesus been a pleasant surprise. My mailbox gets fuller by the week, and I try to respond to all letters," he says. "Incidentally,
I am still involved with local church -- two, in fact. They are, of
course, inter-denominational, non-creedal, and independent, with
multi-media presentations every week. These are communities that fully
engage the culture. Where else would Mr. Hollywood Jesus go? God is
good."

Hot Reviews of the Week
Dan in Real Life
Tom Price | 11/10/07 | Movies, Reviews As Dan increasingly interferes with his
daughter's romance, she later accuses him of being "a Murderer of
Love." For those of us who have been around long enough to ignore some
of our own best advice, Dan in Real Life is an excellent romantic
comedy.
The Pixar Story
Ken Priebe | 11/09/07 | Movies, Reviews Obstacles will always come up and hopes
will always be shattered. Plans we are insistent on sticking to will
fall apart. Then God moves another chess piece, and some other incident
eventually gets us to the dream we wanted, but in a different way.
Fred Claus
Tim Berroth | 11/09/07 | Movies, Reviews Despite the conspicuous absence of "the reason for the season," we would do well to dig deeper to find truth and beauty in Fred Claus. Fred recognizes that a gift is just that: a gift, and that is what the Christmas season is really about.
Classic Crime
Jacob Sahms | 11/08/07 | Music, Reviews Tooth And Nail's Classic Crime makes sweet
questions, but their ability to ask questions that matter will be what
help them last in the long run. It's a battle that we all live and
breathe and work through.
Things We Lost in the Fire
Darrel Manson | 11/07/07 | Movies, Reviews Susanne Bier has a record of making films
that immerse us in the deep end of family life where pain and healing
take place. Things We Lost in the Fire continues the tradition of
thought provoking films that she has established.
Sovatone
Jacob Sahms | 11/06/07 | Music, Reviews Sovatone is a local band from Richmond
(Virginia) that I've had the pleasure of hearing bits and pieces of for
the last two years, but has finally produced an album channeling six
songs to disc for all to hear.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Darrel Manson | 11/06/07 | Movies, Reviews The film is not so much about cowardice or
even betrayal. The film carries a sense of darkness and foreboding-it
goes deeper to the void that is left when those things we take as our
god fail to perform as we hope and expect.
Amazing Grace
CoachZ | 11/06/07 | Movies, Reviews, On DVD Without all these people in Wilberforce's
life, he would never have been able to end slavery in the British
Empire. We need each other; we were made to work together, not alone.
We were made in the image of God, who in profound mystery is three and
yet one.
Women's Murder Club
Maurice Broaddus | 11/06/07 | TV, Reviews Women's Murder Club has a sense of humor
with very much a woman's perspective to it. There's plenty of "girl
talk" and chocolate at the end of the day (and beginning of the day and
many times during the course of an investigation).
Rebellion of Thought
Mike Furches | 11/06/07 | Reviews, On DVD The beginning of the film is filled with
the language of academia. I have to admit, if the documentary had
stayed there, I and many others may have gotten lost. What transpires
before our eyes, though, is one of the beautiful things about
documentary filmmaking.
Thou Shalt Laugh: The Deuce
Mike Furches | 11/05/07 | Reviews, On DVD There is something for everyone in Thou
Shalt Laugh: The Deuce. From the antics of Tim Conway to the satirical
humor of Dan Nainan, it is all there. If you are needing a good
laugh-and who doesn't?-I would suggest picking up a copy.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Yo | 11/05/07 | Games, Reviews Can a game on the underpowered Wii not only
trump one on the more powerful Xbox 360 and at at the same time reveal
the truth about our own struggle with the ultimate corruption? Read the
review and find out.
American Gangster
Maurice Broaddus | 11/05/07 | Movies, Reviews Frank had money, power, a beautiful wife,
all the trappings of success; yet he ultimately failed in his
responsibility as the older brother. Instead of looking out for his
family, his example corrupted and destroyed them. He failed the example
of Jesus' words.
Mage: The Hero Discovered
Maurice Broaddus | 11/05/07 | Comix, Reviews In this pattern (separation as the
reluctant hero is taken from the world that he knows; initiation as the
hero is tested; and return as the hero comes back as conqueror), though
we may see the parallel to Christ, we don't often think about the
beginning of the story.
