Beaufort is a collection of contrasts. The film itself is a contrast:
it is anti-war, but also supportive of the soldiers who must fight in
war. Such films help us to appreciate the nobility of those in armed
forces even if we may think the jobs given to them are wrong.

New "SteinWatch" Feature Launched
On April 18, Ben Stein's new documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed arrives
in theaters across the country. Already the film, which alleges that a
Darwinian establishment controls the scientific community and seeks to
unethically suppress alternative views such as Intelligent Design, is
stirring a great controversy.

I caution us all to neither celebrate Expelled unthinkingly because,
like other pigs, it's a pig; nor to dismiss it as a mere pig, because
it's a snowflake, too. And I think if you examine it closely you'll
find that what you do with it after you've touched it can be very
enriching.

I'm blogging this live... And in the middle of Motive's telecon,
Meyers somehow managed to crash the call... and interject himself into
the Q&A with Stein, Ruloff, Logan, and Mathis! After he made some
accusations of lies and doing the "dishonorable thing," Meyers did ring
off.

In the interest of fair play, I feel compelled to give equal airtime
(and critique) to Gary Chapman's account of Expelled... particularly
given that a good chunk of his commentary is devoted to rebuttal of
Dawkins' and Meyers' comments last weekend.

If there's a market for Expelled, and that remains to be seen, it's
with people who are tired of intellectually bullying... and maybe that's
you. Those who don't want you to see Expelled are as dictatorial as the
worst Sunday School teacher.

From an editor's standpoint, the public response to this incident is
the most bilious that I've seen since The Passion of the Christ, far
out-stripping the brouhaha over The Golden Compass. Expelled is shaping
up to be quite a cultural milestone. |
