Pesky Old Freedom of Choice (Snyder)

The same is true for us. We also have a choice to make, one even more important and dire than those faced by the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The Bible puts it this way: “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.” It seems like such an obvious choice to choose life, and yet it’s one we all struggle with. So the choice is before you, and no one and nothing can make it for you; choose wisely.

One quick note on the inclusion of Venom in Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi, the director, has admitted that the only reason he was included this time out was to please the hordes of fans who love Venom. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it feels like: something added on just to please fans. It’s unfortunate, because throughout the movie Eddie Brock is actually quite an interesting character; but that interest ends as soon as he becomes Venom.

So in the end, Spider-Man 3 is hit or miss. It missed more than hit for me, but for others the reverse might be true. There’s just so much going on that, unlike Spider-Man 2, there isn’t that depth and resonance this time around. Like I said, it’s all fairly disjointed. There are some fun moments, there some great performances, and there are times when you wish things would just move ahead. It may be the biggest film of the year, but that certainly won’t make it the best, and with such a busy summer with so many high profile films coming out, discernment and wise economic strategies will be necessary.

Should you see Spider-Man 3? Sure… eventually. You don’t need to rush out and see it, however. Remember, you always have a choice
