Michael Jackson's This Is It (2009) | Review
Emperor Of Pop
Jacob Sahms
But there is something compelling about the posthumous release of Michael Jackson's "farewell" tour show. Obviously, there isn't much about Jackson's personal life that the film reveals. It doesn't really provide the audience with any answers about his strange relationship with children, or his family, or his need to constantly adapt his own looks. If you have a sort of cynical, critical take on the character that is Michael Jackson (like me), I don't think that this is going to change any of that. But the show, even in its rudimentary development, is pretty sweet. Jackson obviously had some very cool ideas about dance, music, showmanship, and social commentary. He touches on apathy, the environment, and violence in his music, and that is transcendent in these recordings. Even though I am not a fan, and more readily categorized as a critic, I've never been able to avoid the toe-tapping response that occurs when I hear his music. And the recording of this rehearsal allows a younger, hipper crowd to support the King of Pop orally and through choreography. Did Jackson love music? Did he love putting on a good show? Did he love his fans? It seems abundantly obvious that he did. Was that his great success and his great downfall as well? It seems that his desire to please everyone and to rock it for his fans probably lent themselves to his death, and his apparent "bi-polar" personality where he was either very up, or very, very down. So, I'm left with just as many questions as I had before, but again, I'm reminded of the musical mastery of Michael Jackson. I think I'm going to go watch "Thriller" again...
