Finding Your Mission (Broaddus)

Superman has a mission in life and a destiny to fulfill. As a baby, his father, Jor-El, put his only son, Kal-El (Superman's true name) into a rocketship to escape the fate of their doomed planet, Krypton. Descending from the heavens, the small rocketship landed on a farm in Smallville, Kansas, where Kal-El was found by the Kent family. The Kents adopted Kal-El as their own, giving him the name Clark Kent. They had little idea of his true nature or calling.

Clark grew up believing himself to be normal, embracing humanity, and experiencing the preciousness of life. Eventually, he found out who he truly was:  Kal-El, last son of Krypton, sent on a mission to be an example. As Superman, his destiny was to save humanity from the many dangers facing them. He did so for a time, until he was called back to the heavens, promising to one day return.

Unfortunately, when Superman comes back, things seem worse. Old enemies plot and move against him. Those closest to him seem to have forgotten him. New dangers have arisen, seeking to harm the people he has sworn to protect - and those same people aren't ready to trust him again. Superman finds himself at a crossroads with his mission. He must find a way to protect the people he loves. Then he remembers his father's words: "They can be a great people, Kal-El – they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you – my only son."

With that, Superman sets out on a journey of redemption. To fight for truth and justice. To be an example and point the way to a better way of living. To be a hero.

THE JOURNEY TOWARDS FINDING YOUR MISSION

1. The story of a father sending his son for a special mission is not new. The Bible says, "But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons." (Galatians 4:4-5)

2. His Son, Jesus Christ, came to Earth with part of his mission being to live fully human and set an example of how to live. The Bible says that He "made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!" (Philippians 2:7-8)

3. No matter how strong or self-sufficient we think we are, we are all in need of saving. "For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard." (Romans 3:23)

4. Christ also came to serve as a bridge, making peace possible between God and man. The Bible says that "and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross." (Colossians 1:20)

5. All we have to do is believe and accept the truth of Christ's mission as our Savior. "To all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God." (John 1:12)

6. After that, we take on Christ's mission as our own, to be a blessing to the world because the kingdom of God is at hand. The Bible says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
