Deep in the Heart is a film based on the true story of Dick Wallrath. After years of alcohol addiction, he sets out to make things right with God and his family, becomes a rich businessman, and starts setting up scholarships for Texas students through 4H and the FFA (Future Farmers of America). The movie stars Jon Gries and Val Kilmer.

I have to say that the first scene is heartbreaking. It shows Dick as a young kid affectionately brushing a farm animal. A few seconds later, his dad spanks him with a belt for not doing his chores. Seeing young Dick's love and affection toward an animal and then having any love he felt being beaten away was painful to watch. But it set the tone as to why he briefly turned out the way he did.

You later see him as an alcoholic man and how he's become abusive to his wife and kids. Although it gives you a look at the man he used to be, you don't get to spend too much time in the scenes because they end quickly. Maybe this is because they want to get to the recovery quickly. Then again, maybe it is because they can only fit so much into a short movie.

Dick Wallrath truly is an inspiration, which you'll see in this film. He had it real rough and even when he got clean and turned things around, bad things things still happened. Which just goes to show you that life is never fair, even to those who deserve more, such as Dick. But don't let that turn you away from the film; the ending is happy and true.

If you're in the mood for an inspirational film, then give this one a shot. It's not a flawless film, but the message is there.

Deep in the Heart opens today in a limited release across Texas. Click here to find a screening.
