I Am Legend (2007) | Review
The Ultimate Purpose
Chad McComas
In I Am Legend the idea of a God that truly exists is a glimmer of hope that carries the otherwise dark and depressing theme of the movie to a positive conclusion. Overwhelming evil can’t stand in the presence of light. It is the only protection that the “righteous” have. When evil surrounds and attacks, it is the light that drives it away. Light exposes evil and clearly separates good from bad, right from wrong, sin from salvation. Will Smith plays the part of a man obsessed with working for an antidote to the death virus that has totally infected the world. No one is exempt from the evil that the virus has created. Either everyone has been infected with the virus or they are being hunted down by those infected with the virus. Smith has dedicated his life to surviving in the infected world and he is determined to find a cure... even going so far as to sacrifice his own life to find it. Sin kills and those infected with sin seek out and destroy the rest of the world. Jesus came to this sinful “infected” world. He came with the only antidote... His life. (See John 3:16,17) He knew that if He sacrificed His life all of mankind could be cured: “saved.” His cure is available to anyone who wants it... but true evil would rather hunt Him down and destroy Him. Evil did that through the power of Satan and the agony of the cross. But what looked like a victory for evil darkness became a triumph for God. In the gospel of John the reader is informed that the light of God has come down into the world. (See John 1.) Evil doesn't like the light, for the light exposes evil. Jesus said that He was the “light of the world” (John Smith leaves a Legend that saves the world. Jesus left a Legend that saves the world. Those seeking to survive were glad to get Smith’s vaccine to save themselves and the world. Those seeking to survive today are glad to accept Jesus’ gift of salvation that saves themselves and the world. We are left with the inner drive to make everyday matter... shine... expose darkness and save the world. Copyright © 2007 Hollywood Jesus. All rights reserved.
