Jacob's Top Ten
Jacob Sahms

I love top ten lists. Not only are they fun to read, but they provide the opportunity for a good ole fashioned argument! Because every time you rank something, you leave something out, and someone gets offended. So, check out this list of my best bets for this holiday season's movies, and rank your own.

Seann William Scott in Role Models#10 Role Models stands to be this year's Superbad or Knocked Up. Pineapple Express never gained enough steam, and if Zach and Miri Make A Porno doesn't get it done for Kevin Smith, then Role Models stands to step into the gap. Doesn't it seem like we need a raunchily funny, golden-hearted laugh fest to make the season bright? This one, with Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, and Superbad's Christopher Mintz-Plasse, is bound to fill that bill; but I'm not sure if I'll make this one or not.

#9 Four Christmases serves up Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as a couple forced to spend time with all four of their families (both sets of parents are separated) at Christmas. Seriously, has anyone seen the movies Witherspoon has been making since 2005? This smells like a comeback to me. Vaughn's Christmas flair in Fred Claus should help him feel the season, and this one promises funny, poignant moments.

#8 Seven Pounds has shown me nothing yet, but it stars Will Smith and it comes out in the month of December. Two years ago, it was The Pursuit of Happyness, and last year, I Am Legend. Both hit boxoffice gold, entertained, and raised vital questions about what it means to live as an individual and a member of society. Do you really want to bet against Smith, who seems to always own the months of July and December? I don't. I'm not betting on a fun-loving flick, though; but this one stars Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson, as Smith is an IRS agent intent on bettering the lives of seven strangers. Like Pay It Forward before it, this one looks to be entertaining and worthy of a good sermon, too.

#7 Defiance marks Daniel Craig's first mention on my list. Co-starring with Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell, he plays one of the three Jewish Bielski brothers who battle the Nazis from the forests. While the details have certainly been adapted for the silver screen, I'm a sucker for historical fiction, Craig, and anybody fighting Nazis. Probably more in the tearjerker category than happy-go-lucky, this one should be in line for an Oscar nomination, along with Seven Pounds.

#6 Bolt gets my mandatory animation inclusion. The runner-up for consideration was The Tale of Despereaux, not the highly marketed Madagascar 2. If you haven't read this before in one of my commentaries, I sat through the first of the Madagascars with a theater full of mostly unlaughing, unentertained children a few years ago, and won't make that mistake twice. On the other hand, Bolt, the story of a television dog who think he really has superpowers, appears sure to entertain children and their parents over the holidays. Starring John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, the film will be 3-D, adding to its novelty. Certainly, families will confidently attend this one out, for good, wholesome, family fun.
