How Far Would You Go For Love?

Have you ever been in a long distance relationship? Have you ever had to do more than drive across town to get to the woman/man of your dreams? Well, Going the Distance is that chick flick type of movie which has plenty of splashes of crazy sexual comedy akin to 40 Year Old Virgin or Wedding Crashers that tries to even the playing field for spousal enjoyment (if your spouse is down for some inflammatory laugh-getting). But Drew Barrymore and Justin Long ham it up and play for love in this West Coast / East Coast fling with the help of some notable comedic actors.

Jason Sudeikis (SNL, Bounty Hunter) and Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) play Garrett's (Long) crude and crazy buddies, and I must admit that it's Day who sucked me in. He was a year ahead of me at Portsmouth Abbey (go, Ravens!) and his banter with Sudeikis is hysterical and over-the-top. But they aren't alone in their flavoring, as Christina Applegate as Erin's (Barrymore) sister, Jim Gaffigan as Applegate's husband, and Rob Riggle as a friend all bound into the happy couple's situation. All of them weigh in on the way that Garrett and Erin work through their relationship, now that they're separated by time zones, and trying to maintain their growing relationship.

Things like time changes, flight plans, work schedules, other relationships, and much more of the "normal" things interfere along the way, and the two have to fight against what the other person's friends are saying. But of course, they have Skype and can talk and see each other at the same time, which wasn't really available to mere mortals a few years ago! Still, there's nothing like being in the proximity of your "other," and the doubts and insecurities labor against them in those moments when they're apart. That's all pretty normal in my experience, and it's funny enough to watch it play out.

Relationships are tricky things, whether they're with a lover, a loved one, or Love. Going the Distance does a decent job playing with those images even if they're mostly depicting the first through sex. Still, they do a more than fair job of showing the way that the two grow in their common interests, their sense of humor, and their desire to make the other one happy. From a movie standard, this one does a decent job of depicting the real deal... even if the guy does say, "I love you," first, after struggling to actually figure out what relationship means. There are those temptations which get in the way sometimes (Faster's Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and the insecurity of our minds, but in the end, love conquers all and we have to fight through the dry spots together.

Warner's Blu-ray package includes a bunch of extras, like the improvisations that went too far, normal commentary, music videos, and behind-the-scenes, but the way that the cast "advises" us and such are pretty hysterical thanks to the craziness of the assembled crew. Date night or Christmas gift, this one will work for those who've liked flicks like Virgin, Superbad, Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, or Knocked Up. And those who didn't? Maybe they should take a flier on this one.
