This season there are a lot of sequels to look forward to. In fact, most of the highly-anticipated films this year will be given to us in their third installments.

The summer has already begun with the close of the absolute best super hero trilogy of all time. Spider-Man 3.  Okay, so it can be debated that the original Superman series may rival that of Spider-Man. But I mean, seriously—doesn’t that kind of debate just set us back to the days of lunch-period conversations about who would win, Superman vs. Batman? (It’s Superman, by the way.)  There is just something incredibly personal about the whole Spider-Man series. No one can be a Superman, but everyone has that opportunity to be bitten by a radioactive spider. I know personally I see a lot of myself in Peter Parker. Maybe too much.

Second in the list of Thirds is the only animated movie series that ever comes close to my all time favorite animation movies ever from Disney-PIXAR. That is Shrek the Third, the latest in planned series of five. (I have no idea if they’ve now changed that! But there is supposed to be a Puss In Boots movie and a fourth Shrek.) There is no animated comedy quite as funny as the Shrek films, and the jokes are incredibly detailed. In a high school English class, we had to watch the first movie and pull out over a hundred different references to present-time pop culture (even though Shrek is set in the middle ages). In a single Shrek film there are so many gags and jokes that it is impossible to catch everything on the first trip.

Third is Pirates of the Caribbean. I like these pirate movies, but the reason I cannot wait to see the third installment of this Disney cruise is because I cannot wait for it to be over. What?! Yep. I cannot wait for Johnny Depp to be free of this mickey mouse chain. Johnny Depp is one of the greatest actors in Hollywood. He is most well known for not taking any old script that falls in his lap. He refuses high dollar films and prefers the low budget masterpieces. With Depp free of his infamous “Disney Contract” he will be able to work on some more roles that better suit him. (I heard a rumor that Depp didn’t want to be in the first movie so he made Jack Sparrow into a drunk as a way to get out of the contract; he refused to do the character any other way... now look where that got him.)

Ocean’s 13. Please be better than Ocean’s 12. I liked it, but I still don’t get it. I also thought it was incredibly cheesy to have Julia Roberts impersonate herself. If someone wants to refresh my memory on what actually happened, please do. That being said, I still love these movies.

I sure am glad that somewhere down the movie line (probably after the Jurassic Park sequel disasters) Hollywood realized that sequels can be better then the originals. But I’ve still only covered the movies that are opening their third installments. There are more movie multiples coming out this year as well: Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix (number five), and Live Free or Die Hard (number four).

This is going to be an amazing summer of repeats. If you don’t mind, I have to leave. I still have to pre-order my Spider-Man 3 tickets.

Get ready. It’s going to be an amazing season of cinematic deja-vu.
