Inception (2010) | Review
Christopher Nolan: Director, Writer, Dreamer
Nate Watts
In the dream-weaving epic by Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio's character has the unique skill set of getting into people's dreams to extract valuable information. DiCaprio shines in the role, but it is Nolan who is the biggest star of the film, and the above quote may have just as well been attributed to him. Christopher Nolan has quickly become a household name in the last ten years, directing some of the most visually stunning, and inventive films of today. Films like Memento, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight twist and turn and surprise the viewer, with innovative directing, and impressive scripts. He's the director that all of us wanted M. Night Shyamalan to be after watching The Sixth Sense. With Inception, Nolan takes us into uncharted territory, as dreams and reality intertwine seamlessly, with no indication of which way is truly up. Even at the end we can hardly know anything for certain, but the ride is the fun part anyway. DiCaprio plays Cobb, the leader of a band of rag-tag dream-criminals, which include stellar performances from Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, and many others. Nolan seems to have his pick of actors, as everyone seems anxious to get on board with one of his films. Nolan's "dream team" (get it? ...sorry) have the never-achieved task of attempting inception, by implanting an idea in someone's head during a dream. The problem is, that in order to do this, they have to do this in a dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream. So we have at least four plots all interwoven, with plenty of room for confusion on multiple levels. This definitely begs multiple viewings. It all points to the fact that our minds are such fascinating, and cleverly created devices, and the depth of our own understanding of them is still just barely scratching the surface. Dreams are also a very powerful medium, and they have changed the course of history in many instances over the years. Also included on the DVD are several bonus features which go inside the making of the film, and uncover some of the secrets behind how some of the incredible city-bending scenes were done. A few highlights include some pretty interesting scientific study on the brain's subconscious, as well as some "how'd they do that?" moments, including the eye-popping scenes where the dreams fall apart.
