Predators (2010) | Review
Hunter Or Hunted?
Jacob Sahms
While all of these horror/thriller movies find themselves dealing with an Agatha Christie-like And Then There Were None motif, this one also has its own element of "The Most Dangerous Game" well. Flipping the script (so to speak), the humans of various killing expertise are dropped on this tropical planet and hunted by the aliens, but the humans soon start fighting back as the various human-hunting experts fall in line with Brody's Royce. They are Isabelle (Alice Braga of I Am Legend), the black-ops sniper; Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov), the Spetsnaz commando; Stans (Walton Goggins of Justified and The Shield); Mombasa (Mahershalalhasbaz Ali of The 4400), a death squad officer; Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien), a Yakuza assassin; Cuchillo (Danny Trejo), a Mexican cartel killer; and the odd man of the bunch, Edwin (Topher Grace), a wise-cracking family doctor. Together, they hope tostay alive, and Royce convinces them to work together and get off the planet. I'm not a huge slasher/alien flick kind of guy(but I have seen all of the Predator movies)and thanks to Fox, I got to see this one for free. It was quite entertaining, with special effects that made the planet feel real, and gave the audience a clear shot at the aliens quite a few times. While some of the other movies of its ilk go out of their way to keep the surprise, this one allows us to get up-close looks at the different Predators (two warring clans, we're told) and the battles are pretty fierce. Still, even before the credits rolled, I was caught by the thought that in the end, this one is deeper than you'd expect. Like Jesus' "Parable of the Two Sons," we're made to assume that one of our main characters is all good and one is completely selfish, but in the hour of need and decision-making, the two flip-flop decisions based on their actions. What they appear to be and how they present themselves proves to be the antithesis of what they really are. Given the opportunity to grasp an "eternal moment" or to walk into infamy, these two characters switch places and change the dynamic of the movie we've been watching for hours. So hang on tight and enjoy the ride, but consider the person we are versus the person we want to be, and ask yourself, when can you change your spots? Is it ever too late?
