Be Kind Rewind (2008) | Preview
Anticipating Nostalgia
Mark Ezra Stokes
Be Kind Rewind is my pick for “movies worth watching this month.” Don’t get too excited. My last pick was Rescue Dawn, and I apologize to those of you who watched it. There are several reasons I think Be Kind will be a winner, though, and believe it or not, Jack Black is one of them. Michel Gondry is not a commercial filmmaker by anyone’s standards, yet his films manage to add cerebral and emotional credibility to the unlikeliest of subjects. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he raised the bar for the romantic film, proving that it is possible to touch on the ever-present concept of romance in an original and moving way. In Gondry’s hands, Dave Chappell’s Block Party became a documentary about humility, social responsibility and shunning celebrity, all in the context of an edgy rap concert. Though less commercially successful, The Science of Sleep hinted at just how unique and bizarre the inside of Gondry’s brain must look. Be Kind Rewind looks like another celebration of humanity, and a re-exploration of the cinematic moments that have touched us all. The basic premise could’ve very well been lifted from an "I Love Lucy" episode. Jack Black’s character, Jerry, somehow gets magnetized and, as a result, accidentally erases all the videos in his friend’s video rental store. In order to avoid serious consequences, Jerry and his friend, Mike (played by Mos Def), decide to re-record the films starring themselves. In Be Kind Rewind, Gondry makes the risky decision of tackling two of the most typecast actors imaginable -- Jack Black and Mos Def. Remember, though, that this worked wonderfully when he chose Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine. I anticipate that this could be an important step in the careers of both actors, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a bit more of Jack Black's character and less of the man himself (though I still expect a fair share of eyebrow-raising and improvised rock ballads). Thematically, I expect Gondry’s usual exploration of human frailty and perseverance, made visually unique with his distinct, imaginative way of looking at the world. I look forward to strolling down cinematic memory lane with the unwitting customers of Be Kind Rewind, and I anticipate a heartfelt love letter to the most memorable of popular cinema. Of course, with Michel Gondry, there’s no way to expect what will really end up on screen. But I’d say it’s worth the gamble. And when have I ever steered you wrong? Copyright © 2008 Hollywood Jesus.
