When the creators of Sin City (Robert Rodriguez) and Kill Bill (Quentin Tarantino) come together, I have to pay attention.  The two of them love movies, love movies the way I love movies, with all of their cheesy glory.  Often these directors end up making homages to the type of movie they grew up watching and loving, while adding their particular spin to them.  Thus they bring us Grindhouse.

Looks to have that drive-in, double feature feel to it.  “Grindhouses” were inner-city theaters that played all-night marathons of low-budget exploitation films.  These days, we have direct-to-DVD productions, so we don’t have that cinematic experience much anymore.

Planet Terror (Robert Rodriguez) is straight horror movie, a Night of the Living Dead-style throwback—B-movie fun in the sphere of From Dusk ’til Dawn. Death Proof (Quentin Tarantino) appears to be more terror along the lines of The Hitcher.

Over-the-top fun and violence with a cheesy sort of cool

Either way, I’m looking for over-the-top fun and violence with a cheesy sort of cool—a rollercoaster movie in which we’re along strictly for the thrill-ride and visceral experience.  Even purposefully aiming for the look and feel of a low-budget production, expect wild, stylish, and unpredictable filmmaking.

Not for the faint of heart

This movie won’t be for the faint of heart, nor will the stylized filmmaking be easily consumed.  Expect twisted tales and more twisted characters as two master directors work from their palettes of brutality and gore.  The redemptive elements of the movies will be that much harder to find, but they will be there.

I’m betting the fake trailers between the two movies alone will be worth the price of admission.
