Day 17 – Thursday May 25

Hi Everyone:
The Israeli desert is cool! The rains came and we almost decided to shoot Noah’s Ark instead! But it is awesome. All it took was 100 tons of sand. What you’ll never know as you watch the movie is that just out of camera range is so much water that our camels went for a full swim in it tonight. And it’s a good thing they did. These were two camels that needed a little cooling off if you know what I mean. Ah well, spring is in the air… And have you ever heard about how camels can spit. Man, these guys can let one fly about 15 feet. And, we’re talking about a half a bucket full. Just as ask Sharon McDonell our Costumer Designer. One of our humped friends hit her from ten feet. We were all very careful after that… Back to the water.

I’ll post some pictures on the website, but our set is completely submerged except for the front where the camera sees. To get out the back door you’d need a jet-ski. But in the film as they go through that door, they enter a tunnel. That tunnel was originally on location but it is now in a studio. They got it with a crane yesterday from the spot where it had floated away to. As Buck and Chaim go through that back door you’ll not realize on screen that it is twenty five miles away and three days later. Ah, the fraud that it filmmaking…

The other thing you won’t realize as you see Buck and Chaim walk through the desert is that it was actually only about 35 degrees .. and no that is not normal for Canada right now. It should be in the seventies. Kirk and Colin Fox (Chaim) had winter coats on and then just as cameras would roll they would do jumping jacks to warm up and step out in their shirt sleeves like it was a hot Israeli day. Now that is acting. And, did I mention the explosions.

Tonight the most exciting thing was the heat wave they caused. Everyone stood a little closer tonight. A great actor named Gordon Currie has been cast as Nicolae. Though some ‘stars’ had been considered, the right deal did not materialize. For the ‘financing’ it may have been better to have a star, but for the movie the great news is that we got the best actor of everyone that was considered. I’m a guy so it is hard for me to say, but he is very good looking as well as very dignified and very eastern-European.
