SPIRITUAL CONNECTIONS
ON GOING AFTER HOPE AND DREAMS

"Marisa’s journey in this film is finding a balance in her life, between doing what’s good for her and her son, and realizing that it’s okay to want more and to go after it."
--That’s how Jennifer Lopez sums up her role as the hotel worker who risks it all for a chance at romance in Maid in Manhattan.

He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything.
-- ARABIAN PROVERB

Behind the cloud the starlight lurks,
Through showers the sunbeams fall;
For God, who loveth all his works
Has left his hope with all!
-- JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER (1807?1892)

Hope has a thick skin and will endure many a blow; it will put on patience as a vestment, it will wade through a sea of blood, it will endure all things if it be of the right kind, for the joy that is set before it. Hence patience is called ?patience of hope,? because it is hope that makes the soul exercise patience and long-suffering under the cross, until the time comes to enjoy the crown.
--JOHN BUNYAN (1628?1688)

As long as matters are really hopeful, hope is a mere flattery or platitude; it is only when everything is hopeless that hope begins to be a strength. Like all the Christian virtues, it is as unreasonable as it is indispensable.
-- G. K. CHESTERTON (1874?1936)

Dark things reach out toward brightness.
-- EUGENIO MONTALE (1896?1981)

Do not look forward to the changes and chances of this life in fear; rather look to them with full hope that, as they arise, God, whose you are, will deliver you out of them. He is your Keeper. He has kept you hitherto. Hold fast to his dear hand, and he will lead you safely through all things; and, when you cannot stand, he will bear you in his arms. Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow. Our Father will either shield you from suffering, or he will give you strength to bear it.
-- SAINT FRANCIS OF SALES (1567?1622)

BIBLICAL CONNECTIONS
ON HOPE ITSELF

HOPE one of the three main elements of good spiritual character (1 Cor. 13:13).

It is joined to faith and love, and is opposed to seeing or possessing (Romans 8:24; 1 John 3:2).

Hope is an essential and fundamental element of spiritual life, so essential indeed, that, like faith and love, it can itself designate the essence of your spiritual life (1 Peter 3:15; Hebrews 10:23).

In it the whole glory of the earthly vocation is centred (Ephes. 1:18; Ephes. 4:4).

Christ is the actual object of the believer's hope, because it is in his second coming that the hope of glory will be fulfilled (1 Tim. 1:1; Col. 1:27; Titus 2:13).

It is spoken of as ?lively?, i.e., a living, hope, a hope not frail and perishable, but having a perennial life (1 Peter 1:3).

In Romans 5:2 the ?hope? spoken of is probably objective, i.e., ?the hope set before us,? namely, eternal life (comp. Romans 12:12).
