SYNOPSIS
Click to enlargeMaking his feature film starring debut, teen hip hop sensation, Lil' Bow Wow portrays fourteen-year-old orphan Calvin Cambridge, who dreams of being a famous professional basketball player. But his diminutive stature and limited ability make this goal a far-off fantasy. Or is it? When Calvin dons a pair of old sneakers, with the faded initials "M.J." inscribed inside, he displays amazing hoop skills, and leads a struggling NBA team to victory.

I saw this film in Dallas Texas with a group of friends from the New Horizon Vineyard Fellowship one Sunday afternoon. We had a great time. This is a wonderful family film that even older teens and adults can enjoy.

After the film we met back at New Horizons and discussed the film over pizza. The entire group liked the film. (Special thanks to Jeff Niems Associate Pastor)

TO BE LOVED
LIKE MIKE deals with issues of identity, adoption, family, and belonging.

It reminded me of the repeated theme in the early Shirley Temple films: a misplaced parentless child in need of a family. LIKE MIKE follows in this tradition. And it speaks deeply to our need to belong and to be accepted.

Click to enlargeTHE HEART OF THE STORY
Fourteen-year-old Calvin Cambridge (Lil' Bow Wow) spends his days at the orphanage waiting to be adopted and shooting hoops with his best friend, Murph (Jonathan Lipnicki). When he starts to wear a pair of sneakers that used to belong to a famous basketball player and bear the initials M.J.--ostensibly those of basketball legend Michael Jordan--Calvin's wildest dreams begin to come true. The 4'8" teenager is suddenly an unstoppable force on the basketball court and soon finds himself an indispensable member of the LA Knights, a floundering NBA team. As long as Calvin has his magic sneakers, he believes he can do anything and be "like Mike." Ultimately, despite his newfound fame and fortune, Calvin still yearns for a family to call his own.

Morris Chestnut stars as Tracey Reynolds, Calvin's mentor on the Knights team.
The film is also about the transformation Tracey. His relationship with Calvin changes him from a self centered individual to a wonderful caring family man.

There is lots of game footage and multiple cameos from real NBA stars like Allen Iverson and Jason Kidd. The film has bee accused of being a self serving promotional for the NBA. I liked it anyway.

Rap star Lil' Bow Wow is impressive in his film debut, and also contributes songs to the soundtrack.

Although LIKE MIKE is not cinematic masterpiece, the film scores as a good family film with important lessons about life. Enjoy.
