ON REPENTANCE (TURNING YOUR LIFE AROUND)

An unrepented sin is a continued sin.
--CORRIE TEN BOOM (1892–1983)

Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement; he is a rebel who must lay down his arms . . . This process of surrender—this movement full speed astern—is what Christians call repentance. Now repentance is no fun at all. It is something much harder than merely eating humble pie. It means unlearning all the self-conceit and self-will that we have been training ourselves into for thousands of years. It means killing part of yourself, undergoing a kind of death.
--C. S. LEWIS (1898–1963)

Like the father of the Prodigal Son, God can see repentance coming a great way off and is there to meet it, the repentance is the reconciliation.
--DOROTHY L. SAYERS (1893–1957)

ON RECONCILATION (MAKING UP WITH OTHERS)

In God alone can man meet man.
--GEORGE MACDONALD (1824–1905)

To reconcile man with man and not with God is to reconcile no one at all.
--THOMAS MERTON (1915–1968)

Never once is God said to be reconciled to man; it is always man who is reconciled to God.
--WILLIAM BARCLAY (1907–1978)

ON REDEMPTION (BEING OKAY)

The strangest truth of the gospel is that redemption comes through suffering.
--MILO L. CHAPMAN

The purpose of Christ’s redeeming work was to make it possible for bad men to become good—deeply, radically, and finally.
--A. W. TOZER (1897–1963)

Reconciliation
A change from being enemies to being friends. It is mutual, i.e., it is a change wrought in both parties who have been "enemies".

(1.) In Col. 1:21, 22, the word there used refers to a change in the personal character of a person who ceases to be an enemy to God, and yields up to God full confidence and love.

Col. 1:21-22 (MsgB)
You yourselves are a case study of what he does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God, thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God's side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence.

(2.) Rom. 5:10 refers not to any change in our disposition toward God, but to God himself, as the party reconciled. So also 2 Cor. 5:18, 19 speaks of a reconciliation originating with God. In Eph. 2:16 it is clear that God is not trying to win back the sinner, but to restore the person to of God’s forfeited favor.

Romans 5:10 (MsgB)
If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we're at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life!
