SYNOPSIS
|
Jimmy
Neutron is "just your average everyday pre-teen supergenius." His
best friend, Goddard, is a dog-like robot pet who follows Jimmy everywhere.
Parents Jim and Judy Neutron come pretty close to being George and
Judy Jetson, but his best friend, the allergic Carl Wheezer, doesn't
resemble anybody in recent sci-fi animation history. A sleek-looking,
computer-animated children's adventure, JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS
delivers equal doses of kid fun and family values. |

| This
film is about the alien-ation that happens in families and the sense
of responsibility that the children often feel. Jimmy disobeys his
parents resulting in evil outer space aliens taking his parents away
(sin = alienation). Through acknowledgment of his wrongdoing (repentance),
Jimmy brings his family back together by getting his friends to help
him (community). The film, for me, was an allegory of the guilt that
children carry with them -often for a lifetime- due to the alienation
of (or from) their parents (e.g. separation, divorce, untimely death,
parental suicide). This film can speak to the guilt fantasies harbored
by Generation X (i.e. "the children of the divorced"): "If
only I would have... maybe every
thing would have turned out better... if I...
if I... if I..." |
JIMMY'S
PARENTS
Meet Jimmy's parents. They are happy and committed. Jimmy has a pleasant
home atmosphere. Every kid's dream. |
JIMMY'S
DISOBEDIENCE
This is Jimmy disobeying his parents by talking to strangers. In this
case he is making contact with alien forces in outer space. This contact
with the evil alien forces creates a traceable radio link to Jimmy's
happy home. Interesting, because it gives a spiritual (other worldly)
and cosmic (universal) dimension to personal sin/choices. |
JIMMY'S
TEACHER
Jimmy disobeys other adults too. Jimmy and his friends decide to cut
school. It is during their unofficial day off that the aliens take
all the parents away. This scene portrays the corporate nature of
sin among friends (shared responsibility). |

|
 JIMMY
TO THE RESCUE
Having learned his lesson about disobedience, Jimmy sets out to rescue
his parents from the alien(ation) forces. |
MINDLESS
PARENTS
Jimmy's otherwise intelligent parents have had their brains taken
over by these evil alien forces. The idea here is that children often
are aware (or at least they think they are) of the reasons why their
family breakup has occurred. And indeed, they sometimes can see the
alienating forces more clearly between their parents. |
HAPPY
ENDING.
Like most children's stories Jimmy Neutron has a happy ending. Jimmy
takes responsibility for his own stuff, deals with it and takes the
necessary steps to correct his wrong doings. And ultimately that is
the only thing that any of us can do. This film is about the delightful
consequences of repentance. Highly Recommended. |

| My
son recently dragged me to the discount movie theater to see the movie
"Jimmy Neutron." I was reluctant, but as any good dad I realized that
I needed to give in to the occasional desire of my son. I did not
know that the movie was a Nickelodeon release when I attended, if
I had I probably wouldn't have taken him and that would have been
my mistake.
To
say the least I was pleasantly surprised at this Academy Award nominated
animation film. In the past there have been many projects by Nickelodeon
that arguably question parents' authority in raising their children.
Jimmy Neutron breaks that mold and shows a wonderful tale of love
between children and their parents.
While
the children in this film are mischievous they ultimately recognize
their love for their parents and literally launch an all out effort
to save them from evil captors from another planet. Led of course
by Jimmy and his group friends. In scenes somewhat similar to Something
Wicked This Way comes by Ray Bradbury the group is lured into a
local carnival in an attempt to fight against the evil forces that
would take them from their families. From here they use the genius
of Jimmy and the carnival rides to make spaceships that will carry
the children on this ultimate adventure.
Jimmy
Neutron is more than just animated fare. It is a film that looks
at the relationships between adults and children. There are characters
that will keep the children's attention but it is also a story that
will keep the interest of the parents. I would highly recommend
that you check out this video/DVD release once it comes out. As
far as my house goes, I enjoyed the film so much with my son that
we are planning on purchasing a copy of the DVD. Personally, I don't
mind the message that children need their parents; frankly, this
film shows that we need each other and that is a message for parents
and children.
On
a scale of 1-10 I'll blast this one with a Jimmy Neutron wonder
blast of 7.5.
God
Bless,
