It
is so much easier when evil is readily identifiable. The evil
in Identity is in some ways safely controlled so that we don't
really have to fear it. But we may be surprised to see how like
us the evil might be.

What
if every choice we ever make was already made for us? What if there
really were no coincidences in life and our destinies were already
predetermined?
From
James Mangold, the writer/director of Cop Land
and Girl Interrupted, and Cathy Konrad, the producer
of the Scream franchise, comes Identity,
a mind- bending thriller with a shockingly original and disturbing
twist.
Ten
strangers with secrets are brought together in a savage rainstorm:
A limo driver (John Cusack), an ‘80s TV star (Rebecca DeMornay),
a cop (Ray Liotta) who is transporting a killer (Jake Busey), a
call girl (Amanda Peet), a pair of newlyweds (Clea DuVall and William
Lee Scott) and a family in crisis (John C. McGinley, Leila Kenzle,
Bret Loehr), all take shelter at a desolate motel run by a nervous
night manager (John Hawkes).
Relief
in finding shelter is quickly replaced with fear as the ten travelers
begin to die, one by one. They soon realize that, if they are to
survive, they’ll have to uncover the secret that has brought
them all together.
Identity
is rated R for strong language and violence. |

Horror
films offer an opportunity to look at the question of evil. Sometimes
it may be seen as other-worldly demons. It may be seen as a monster
who lives among us. It may be seen as something that comes from within.
Can evil be conquered or will evil win out?
Identity
is dark and stormy, just the kind of atmosphere you expect to be inhabited
with evil. Terrible things begin to happen. Then several people are
stranded by the storm is a seedy, creepy motel in the Nevada desert
with no chance to communicate with the outside world. Then the killings
start.
Nothing
very original at this point. In fact, one of the characters makes
reference to Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians
which has been put on film a few times. (The best version was the
1945 And Then There Was None.) There are certainly
similarities as one by one the group meets accidents or violence with
no other suspects except the surviving group members.
The story involves plenty of twists, some you may guess, others you
won't. But even if you guess some of them, the timing still brings
surprises. There is a good cast, anchored by John Cusack, Ray Liotta
and Amanda Peet. Some of the characters are likable; some you may
hope are the next victim. As the story moves on it becomes clearer
what is going on and the inevitability of the outcome. But even when
you know what is happening, there are still twists up to the very
end of the movie.
Watching
a film like this, we may think of who we do or don't want to be the
killer. Maybe we just hope that whoever it turns out to be that we
know it isn't someone like us. We want it to be someone who is clearly
malevolent and unworthy of our compassion. It is so much easier when
evil is readily identifiable. The evil in Identity
is in some ways safely controlled so that we don't really have to
fear it. But we may be surprised to see how like us the evil might
be. |
