The film speaks to the many folks in our culture who have been burned by infidelity, divorce and lostness. The film resonates for those who sense that God has intended something better for their life. That life does have a grander purpose than the garbage they have been served. --Review by David Bruce ![]() HOPE FLOATS (1998)
Birdee Pruitt: Sandra Bullock, Justin Matisse: Harry Connick Jr., Ramona Calvert: Gena Rowlands, Bernice Pruitt: Mae Whitman. |
Directed by Forest Whitaker. Written by Steven Rogers. Running time: 114 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for thematic elements).
The real victims in all of these marriage breakups are always the kids. I am amazed at the number of recent films that have emphasized the importance of fidelity and the painful destructiveness of unfaithfulness. |
We are created to be in relationship with others. This is part of what it means to be created in the image of God. When relationship is violated it can produce effects that last for generations. Birdee's return to Smithville (her paradise) is a theme also explored, in different ways, in The Truman Show, and Pleasantville. For Birdee, her return is to a loving and committed mother and father. It is a return to the better values of small town, family and commitment. |

Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 From: M&M I REALLY ENJOYED HOPE FLOATS. I THINK IT REALLY TELLS YOU THAT WITH "HOPE" AND "FAITH" YOU CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THE UNIMAGINABLE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BELIEVE! I BOUGHT THE MOVIE AND WATCH IT WHEN I AM FEELING DOWN. I REALLY LOOK UP TO "BIRDIE" FOR HANGING IN THERE. I THINK IT IS A VERY INSPIRING MOVIE. M&M include("inserts/comment_dark_bkgd.htm"); ?>
