| SYNOPSIS |
“No matter what, no matter when,
no matter who, any man has a chance to sweep any woman off her
feet. He just needs the right broom.
-- Alex “Hitch” Hitchens
In Columbia Pictures’ sophisticated romantic comedy Hitch, Alex “Hitch” Hitchens
(Will Smith) is a legendary -- and deliberately anonymous -- New
York City “date
doctor” who, for a fee, has helped countless men woo the women of their
dreams.
While coaching Albert (Kevin James), a meek accountant who is smitten with a
glamorous celebrity, Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta), Hitch finally meets his match
in the person of the gorgeous, whip-smart Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a gossip columnist
who follows Allegra’s every move.
The ultimate professional bachelor, Hitch suddenly finds himself falling deliriously
in love with Sara, a reporter whose biggest scoop could very well be the unmasking
of Manhattan’s most famous date doctor. |

At
first glance, Hitch may
look like a silly movie about a “date doctor” teaching
geeks how to wine, dine and bed good looking women. In fact,
it’s a whole lot more. We find that the aspirations of
Alex “Hitch” Hitchens (Will Smith) are far greater
than wining, dining and bedding (as shown in a scene where
a high powered Wall Street hot shot unsuccessfully tries
to force Hitch to take him as a client). In his world, even
shy firemen, quiet doormen, and—in
the main focus of this film—a
portly, four-eyed financial advisor with dorky dance moves
deserve the chance to sweep the beautiful women of their dreams
off their feet.

Sometimes
the romantic comedy formula seems dead. I mean, how many last-minute-realization/mad-dash-to-the-airport
scenes can we endure? How many quirky best friend characters? How
many predictably happy endings? But still, I for one don’t
mind seeing a well-worn formula done well—after all, formulas
become formulas because, at some level, they work. Hitch works.
It follows the romantic comedy formula well, and also manages to
do some unique things with it. In the end, it’s good for lots
of laughs, the requisite insights into love and life, some great
dialogue, and hopefully, more opportunities for Kevin James to get
film roles.

I
know other reviewers at Hollywood Jesus have done this movie
and to be honest, I didn’t even
know I was going to be seeing it until last night right before
I walked into the theater. To be honest I have to have one of
the most unique perspectives and experiences of seeing this movie
of anyone on the planet.
Yesterday was the day of love for most of us in North American, Valentines Day,
2005. My present vocation as a pastor allows me some unique opportunities and
yesterday was one of the most unique I have ever had.
