HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT
À la folie... pas du tout

One of the lessons this film teaches is that we need not be too quick to judge. In most every situation, there are many things we don't know. We are usually told the situation from a single perspective. We may know that we need to hear other versions, but we often use that first hearing to form our opinion and will judge further information from that point of view.

SYNOPSIS
Click to enlargeTwo parts thriller, one part romantic comedy, HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT stars French ingénue Audrey Tautou -- whom audiences and critics alike embraced as Amelie -- in a daring role that gives her sweet persona a much deeper shading.

Rising young artist Angelique (Tautou) lives in a candy-colored fantasy world. From the moment she flashes her smile and persuades a flower shop owner to deliver a surprise single rose to her lover Loic (Samuel Le Bihan), the world has – again – fallen under her spell. In the glorious throes of true love, Angelique is happily planning her future: a career as a painter and a future with Loic… what more could she desire?

But things are rarely as they seem and Loic, a married cardiologist, has a slightly more jaded take on their affair…

With a cleverly fractured structure, HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT is a delightfully intriguing tale of deception that will make you wonder exactly whom, in the maddening game of love, can you trust?

Darrel has an incredible love and interest in the cinematic arts.
His reviews usually include independent and significantly important film.

About a year ago, American audiences were introduced to Audrey Tautou in the role of Amélie, a sweet, innocent young woman who is in love. In He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, we see her in a very similar role -- at least for the first half of the movie.

Click to enlargeAngélique is a young artist who is in love with a cardiologist. Unfortunately the doctor is married, but she is sure that he will soon be leaving his wife and running off with her. As we watch, we see her hope fade as the doctor treats her poorly. Finally she with nothing left to hope for, she turns on the gas oven and lies down to die.

At that point, the film "rewinds" to the beginning and we see the story from the doctor's perspective. And we are in for a surprise. Not everything is as it appears to be.

Click to enlargeThe discoveries we make about the relationship as we go through the story the second time make us question everything we thought the first go round. It is obvious that there is always more than one side to a story. As we watch the first half of the film, we see only one side, but it seems very clear. But then we see a different story that gives us a better idea of the truth.

Click to enlargeThis movie tells a wonderful story. The screenplay does just what it seeks to do, by drawing us into Angélique's world and love. We celebrate with her in her love and mourn the loss of that love and her downward spiral. And then we are completely turned around by the surprising truth behind the story.

Tautou does a wonderful job in this role. She once again shows the endearing vulnerability that characterized Amélie, but here she also shows a darker side with just as much authenticity.

One of the lessons this film teaches is that we need not be too quick to judge. In most every situation, there are many things we don't know. We are usually told the situation from a single perspective. We may know that we need to hear other versions, but we often use that first hearing to form our opinion and will judge further information from that point of view.

He Loves Me . . . challenges us to look deeper before we judge someone else. As we watch the film, we make our judgments about this poor, lovelorn artist and the caddish doctor who has toyed with her, only to have to rethink our perspectives and opinions.
