Harry Potter has grown.

Not only has Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) aged another year. Not only does he have his first serious crush. Not only does he compete for even greater renown as a contestant among the three wizarding schools participating in a Triwizard Tournament. But because the spirit infused within Harry Potter by his creator is beginning to come to the fore.

As the only one ever to survive the killing curse of the dark Lord Voldemort, the Boy Who Lived begins in this film, through the ordeals Harry experiences because of the Goblet of Fire, to make his mark as The Boy Who Loved.

Harry Potter is older, grittier, darker, more magical—and all of that makes the story more life like. We live in a gritty, sometimes dark world where miracles happen everyday but we only notice when they’re BIG and in our faces. The development of Harry and his friends continues in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire provides an adventure for all ages, that allows the characters to symbolize ideals bigger than themselves. Grab your Thunderbolts and Nimbus 2000s;

HARRY POTTER 4There is always a palpable sense of tension in an audience that is waiting for a new installment in a series of movies. You can almost hear the thoughts grinding: Will this movie be as good as the others before it? Will this movie be better than the others? Will the characters still have chemistry? Will the new characters be well-acted and believable? Will the movie do justice to the book? How on earth will the screenplay adapt itself to a story with so much to tell?

These were questions that I struggled not to be concerned about as I waited for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to begin. Within moments of the opening scenes and dialogue, I knew I had nothing to fear. Steve Kloves again scores hugely with a screenplay that masterfully handles a very large book filled with multiple themes and plot twists. Mike Newell reveals his directorial eye for blocking and composition and a director’s mind that understands the personalities and motivations of his characters. The movie fairly reeks of a cast having a great time making Book Four come to life on the screen!

Harry Potter fans will be happy to hear that the new film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the best film in the series so far and offers a faithful interpretation of the book without trying to cram in every last detail. Likewise, critics of Harry Potter will be happy to know that the new film has plenty of magic and wizardry, some of it quite dark, to help fuel their continued criticism and animosity for the series. Regardless of one’s feelings for the subject matter, this is a well made film that is technically and artistically accomplished, and entertaining as well.
