THE GOOD GIRL
There is at least some hope in the ending shots of the film, that allows us to see the good that can come even after the evil that we have allowed in our lives. There is a reminder that even when we have sinned -- even when we have gone far beyond where I ever dreamed of going -- there is still the chance to turn back and joy that can be found even in the lives that have seemed to be so much like a prison.

SYNOPSIS
It's her last best chance... is she going to take it?
Jennifer Aniston is Justine, the title character of THE GOOD GIRL. Justine, though, is no longer a girl - she is grown up, married and longs to start a family. Without a doubt her husband, Phil loves her, but they have so far been unable to conceive, and Justine wonders if all the pot he smokes with his best friend Bubba might be the reason why.

One day at work, Justine discovers something of a soul mate in Holden, a creative, passionate young man who represents a chance for Justine to escape into a new world of emotional and sexual awakening. But when the affair quickly moves from liberation to poisonous obsession, Justine finds herself ensnared in a chaotic web of blackmail, larceny and love.

Is Justine ultimately a good girl? Can she make the right choice between her dependable husband and disturbed lover? Written by Mike White and directed by Miguel Arteta, THE GOOD GIRL gives Aniston the chance to create a character with the complexity of a present-day suburban Emma Bovary.

Darrel has an incredible love and interest in the cinematic arts. His reviews usually include independent and significantly important film.

Click to enlargeAt first, I thought I'd let The Good Girl go by without comment. I wasn't especially impressed. The performances were very good, but the characters portrayed were a bit too cartoonish. There's really no one in the film to sympathize with. They all have made bad choices and continue to make bad choices. Why should we feel bad (or feel anything) for these losers who are just living out their past mistakes? I think underneath the humor, there could well be a subconscious disdain and contempt for those people who have not really found a place within "the American Dream."

But as I began work on an upcoming sermon on Romans 12:9-21, the ending of that lesson made me think of The Good Girl. Paul writes: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." And so I began to think again about the film and what it tells us about good and evil.

Click to enlargeIn the story about Cain and Abel, God warns Cain, "If you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door." To be sure, sin is lurking at the doors of the characters of The Good Girl. The boredom of life, feeling trapped, wanting to be something else, being overwhelmed by one's own mediocrity. Sin lurks at the door waiting for an opportunity.

Click to enlargeIt plays out in Phil and Bubba sitting around after work getting high. It plays out in Cheryl's acerbic comments to customers and her "cirque du face" makeovers. It plays out in Bubba's rape by blackmail. It plays out especially in the attraction and adultery between Justine and Holden. There are always those times when sin is there lurking at the door waiting for a chance to come into our lives.

Each time the characters let sin in the door, it only makes their lives worse. Often it seems good and right at the time, but down the road there is a cost. Sometimes down the road there is a line that, if crossed, may change things forever.

Click to enlarge"Do not," Paul wrote, "be overcome by evil." That of course is the danger. It's not just that sin may find its way in the door -- it does with all of us. But the real risk is that we will let evil overcome us. Justine builds sin upon sin, lie upon lie, until she comes to a place where she is about to be overwhelmed. At that point it comes down to whether or not she is going to be good or not -- whether she will be overcome by evil -- or whether her good will overcome the evil.
