Have you ever had such a ridiculously bad day that you suddenly realized it was so bad it was hysterical? Now, imagine almost a year of the same feeling. Welcome to a year in the life of Julia Sweeney, as portrayed in her uproariously funny comedy, GOD SAID, "HA!" (based on her one woman Broadway show.)

"People say, 'When did you start writing it?' and I'll say, 'I never wrote it.' Only in the end I transcribed what I was saying to have a copy of it. I never sat down and composed it. It was more like I was just ranting. Just to remember what story followed the other, I made an outline of just headers. How I came up with the words was improvised."

Her year started out great. She had just ended a successful stint on "Saturday Night Live," divorced her husband (amicably, of course!) and, most importantly, purchased her dream house. Life looked good. The future seemed promising. And she had it all planned. Until...God said, "Ha!"

Her brother got sick battling terminal cancer. And so he moved in. Her parents got worried. And so they moved in. She had all she could take. And so she moved -to the couch. The dream house was suddenly overrun and she once again became a child. She found herself sneaking cigarettes, plotting to fool around with her boyfriend "while mom and dad are out," and defending her right to buy "fancy spaghetti sauce." And, Sweeney was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer.

And then, Julia's life started to really unravel...

VISITOR RESPONSES

GOOD GRIEF!

This movie is a must-see for everyone, and especially for anyone experiencing grief! Julia Sweeney just busts that little bubble of isolation, that "I'm the only one this has ever happened to" feeling. She does something that is lacking, even frowned upon - she SHARES what's happened to her. Even worse (better), she LAUGHS about it! And in doing so, she teaches us to overcome those pesky social obstacles for the sake of our health and sanity. We lose some of our humanity when we lose our sense of humor and ability to share our difficulties, which are, after all, universal. Who knows how many people can be helped when we reach out to them. I was.
My response: How right you are!

AND GOD SAID HA TO LANDRY.
July 13, 1999. I've read the book and listened to the CD, can't wait for the movie. About a year after I first read the book I lost my wife to the same type of cancer as Julia's brother. Re-reading it afterwards was a great comfort. -Landry
