GENESIS
Unfortunately you may not be able to see this great cinematic retelling of the Bible's Genesis. Filmed in Africa it casts only Africans in all the roles. If Adam and Eve were Africans why not everyone else?

Esau - Salif Keita
Hamor - Balla Moussa Keita

With: Habib Dembele, Magma Coulibaly, Oumar Mamory Keita.
A Kora Films presentation of a Kora Films/Balanzan/CNPC/Cinema Public Films production.
Executive producers, Jacques Atlan, Chantal Bagilishya.
Delegate producer, Ibrahima Toure.
Directed by Cheick Oumar Sissoko. Screenplay,
Jean-Louis Sagot-Durvauroux.
It was a hit at the 1999 Cannes film festival. As the press book suggests: "if Adam and Eve were African,
why not Jacob?" Reports about this film are really up beat. Unfortunately, it may never reach the United States. Or, if it does, it may only play at Black film fests. I hope it gets better distribution than this. I really want to see this film. In fact I wan t to own it on video tape.

Hear is what one reporter says about this film:

"One of the more challenging viewing experiences at Cannes this year, "Genesis" by Mali director Cheick Oumar Sissoko should be prepared for with a close rereading of the Bible. So dense and poetic is Jean-Louis Sagot-Durvauroux’s screenplay and so
relentlessly African the idiom that viewers, like Noah, often find themselves adrift in high water. Sissoko uses magnificent African desert vistas as his backdrop for this highly symbolic, often theatrical version of Bible stories. The one contemporary
message that comes through is the need for all men to become true brothers so that peace can be achieved.

...Sissoko uses his native cultural heritage to advantage, drawing curious parallels to biblical hunting and agricultural societies."

The story covers chapters 23 to 37 of Genesis. Focusing on Esau and his younger brother Jacob and his son Joseph.
