Stalingrad, 1942-a pivotal point for the allies during WWII. A very difficult battle lasting for approximately 6 months. At times you feel as though you are looking at the field of Gettysburg-so many bodies, no time to mourn or bury. Nikita Khrushchev wants results. He wants a victory. He tells his officers "this is more than a city, it is a symbol. This is not Moscow or Kiev, this is Stalingrad."
Click to enlargeClick to enlargeClick to enlarge
But it is very difficult to inspire the comrades to win against all odds when they are slaughtered by the enemy if they press forward and are shot by their own comrades if they choose to retreat. They are underfed, mistreated and poorly armed.

Click to enlargeWhen the new recruits arrive at Stalingrad, they are herded into a truck and issued one rifle for every two soldiers. A man standing in the bed of the truck shouts instructions: "The one with the rifle shoots. The one without, follows him. When the one with the rifle gets killed the one without picks up the rifle and shoots." These instructions are repeated over and over as the soldiers hurry to their looming death. A dismal scene, a hopeless cause.

As Khrushchev rants, one of his officers (Joseph Fiennes) speaks up. ?What the soldiers need, what the country needs is a hero.?

Khrushchev sneers, ?Do you know any heroes??

?Yes. One.?

Vassili Zaitsev is indeed the stuff that heroes are made of. He is a young shepherd who has learned from his grandfather to shoot wolves. He may be the greatest sharpshooter ever.

Fiennes goes to work on Vassili?s PR and gets him promoted from foot soldier to sharpshooter.

Vassili shoots and shoots well. He targets the German officers so that the less experienced men must be continually promoted.
Click to enlargeHitler is furious. He sees Stalingrad as a personal battle between Stalin and himself. Hitler sends expert Nazi sniper Major Koenig (Ed Harris) to eliminate Vassili. Now the battle becomes a battle of skill and psychology.
Click to enlargeIt is interesting to watch a fiercely fought battle over a city that is in ruin. There is more rubble than buildings. Normality of life has stopped. Few families have been left intact. Childhoods have been destroyed as the children become spies and messengers. Fear is a normal condition here. It is also difficult to root for either side.
Click to enlargeOn the one hand we have the Germans, Hitler and unspeakable atrocities. Click to enlargeHowever on the other side are Stalin and Khrushchev? not exactly an inspirational group. Stalin is responsible for the cruel deaths of millions, for banning religion, and the dehumanizing of nations.

Click to enlargeDanilov is a true Soviet. He loves mother Russia. He loves the Communist Party. He sees the battle between Vassili and Koenig as the essence of the class struggle. The shepherd boy goes up against the nobleman.
SPOILER INFO FOLLOWS
Click to enlargeKoenig appears to be heartless man. Click to enlargeAs he arrives in Stalingrad, he pulls down the shade in his train car to hide the view of the wounded soldiers in the next train. He later commits a despicable act by hanging a young boy in order to lure out Vassili.

Click to enlargeIn the end, Danilov becomes disillusioned with communism. ?Man will always be man; there is no new man. We tried so hard to create a society where you would have no need to envy your neighbor.? Danilov had put his hope in a society, a government. He had hoped that the inherent evil in man would be abolished through communism.

Now disillusioned and distraught he determines to give one last gift to Vassili. ?I want to do something for you. Let me show you where the Major is.?

As Vassili cries ?No!?

Danilov exposes himself and Koenig kills him.

Click to enlargeThe battle ends by February 1943. As history has shown, this was a turning point and the beginning of Hitler's demise. Nonetheless, the war between good and evil has not ended. Some believe it will never end.

However, the Bible tells us that evil will one day be eliminated. Meanwhile laws, societies and governments are put in place to bring order, justice and peace to our world. Nevertheless, the Bible also tells us that human law and attempts at goodness will always fall short. "All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment." (Isaiah 64:6)

THE HORROR OF WAR

After a few minutes I saw something coming up the road along the river that looked like a parade of roast chickens. Some of them kept asking for ?Water! Water!? They were all naked, and they were skinned. The skin of their hands had been torn away at the wrists. It was hanging from their fingertips just behind the nails, turned inside-out like a glove. In the dim light I thought I saw many other children lying all about the yard.
?Concerning the 1945 Atom Bomb TAKASHI NAGAI

In front of us a curious figure was standing, a little crouched, legs straddled, arms held out from his sides. He had no eyes and the whole of his body, nearly all of which was visible through tatters of burnt rags, was covered with a hard black crust speckled with yellow pus. A Korean woman by his side began to speak, and the interpreter said: ?He has to stand, cannot sit or lie.? He had to stand because he was no longer covered with a skin, but with a crust-like crackling which broke easily.
?Concerning the 1952 Napalm Bomb RENE CUTFORTH

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the houses of its children. This is not a way of life. . . . Under the cloud of war, it is humanity hanging itself on a cross of iron.
DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1890?1969)

O war! thou son of hell!
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564?1616)

The wars that rage within the world are a reflection of the wars that rage inside people.
LEIGHTON FORD

CLOSING SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS

God does not leave us hopeless. He does not look upon us and say ?You are no good. You never were and you never will be.? Instead, God says to us "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest." Matthew 11:28

Jesus said, "I've told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I've conquered the world." (John 16:33)

Jesus said, ?I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for?will freely go in and out, and find pasture.? (John 10:9)

Jesus offers us eternal life and peace. Not a peace that the world gives?one that is here one day and snatched away the next. Not a peace that is dependent on the compassion, goodness or wisdom of our government officials?but a peace that casts out fear. A peace that we can rely on through any storm that comes. Today, that offer is given to you. Will you accept the gift Jesus is handing you?

WHAT ABOUT THE EROTICISM OF THIS FILM?

I'm amazed that the review doesn't even mention the love story that evolves during the movie. There is a scene in which the Russian hero and his girflfriend engage in the most erotic sexual scene I have ever witnessed in a movie. The scene showed very little skin, but it succeeded in being more erotic than most films that show everything.

Enemy at the gates if one of the better films I have seen this year. however that being said I haven't seen a really good movie yet. the one thing that set this movie above some of the other war movies I've seen was the gripping storyline intnse action. But most importantly th the fact that it does not try to glorify war at all. There is one scene that jumps to mindand shows us how horrific war can be, the scene takes place when the Russians were counter attacking the Germans, and they are told that if any ones turns back they will be shot. We see later on that it wasn't just an open threat when the Russians opened fire on there own troops. The one thing that ruined the film was the fact that they decided to through a love story in the middle of the war. Other than the sappy love story the film stays pretty historically accurate and the special effects are out of this world if I would have to rate this film, I would probably give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It would of been rated alot higher if it didn't try to imitate titanic. However I would definitely recommend checking it out.

ENJOYED IT

Enemy at the Gates is a good movie. I think that it shows what war is like. It has a good story line and it keeps you hoping that Vassili doesn't get killed. It is like you are there in the battle. The movie starts out with the soldiers on a train going to war. Only half of the soldiers have guns and the ones without the guns have to wait for someone with a gun to be killed. The main character [Vassili] gets a gun and kills five nazis. Vassili becomes a very good sniper and the Germans send in a man who is an excellent sniper to come in and kill Vassili. A battle starts between these two people. They both concentrate on killing each other. I think that some of the parts weren't nessesary for the story. They were just put in to make the movie just like other movies. I think that the movie showed what war really is like and it was true to history. This movie is more realistic than some of the other war movies. I enjoyed it.

STALINGRAD

Is Enemy at the gate a good movie? Well I am going to have to say it is a pretty good movie; it has everything you could want and everything for everyone. It has your violent action pact parts for action lovers, your love scenes for the hopeless romantics, and your slow parts for who ever likes them.

Some good parts to the movie are the beginning where all the soldiers are running out to fight, but only half of them have guns. This leads to part where Vassili gets a gun a kills five nazi guards. Some other good parts are where Vassili gets promoted to sniper unit; he gets to sneak around and snipe nazis that are not careful. The best parts of the whole movie is when Vassili goes head to head with Konig (an amazing nazi sniper), there are many exciting parts where Konig and Vassili try to out smart each other, or try to anticipate each other. So I don't spoil the ending I will just tell you it is a great ending, it is one of my favorite parts also.

Some of the dumb and pointless parts of this movie is the sex scene, it is totally unneeded. You are watching all the soldiers sleeping in the dugout, then in comes Tania who lays beside Vassili and well you know what happens from there, it is totally pointless. The movie was very drawn out also, there was a lot of slow parts, such as Vassili sitting at a post for a few minutes seeing nothing, and then he leaves, it was unneeded, it just made the movie longer.

All in all the movie was pretty good the pros out weighed the cons making it a okay movie. I must say it was a very entertaining movie that was very informative. It portrays the battle of Stalingrad very well.

FOUR SNORE

KONIG IS NOT A NAZI
Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001
From: Darren

I really enjoyed this movie.

First of all, it must be said that Konig (Ed Harris) isn't a nazi. He is a German soldier, and a good one at that with a reputation. His superiors, however, are Nazis. There is a point in this film when Konig is stripped of his medals and dogtags-because the Nazis didn't want him to be killed and some Russian boasting of the victory. We also learn that Konig had a son -a German officer-who was killed there at Stalingrad.

And while we root for Vassili (Jude Law) we realize that his superiors are no better. You cannot retreat. Anyone coming "back" would be shot. He is sent into battle without a weapon. And when the soldier dies in front of him, the gun is stolen by another Russian officer. When he kills five Nazis/German officers helping out the pinned down Danilov ( Joeseph Fiennes) he is Propergandized by Danilov (an early form of Media?) and Vassili is promoted to sniper unit, and is good at what he does.

However, I have to take serious issue with what I read. I feel you give away a lot of the film, way too much. For the sake of future readers, I will not say specifically what they are, but I am somewhat taken aback of what you give away.

*Furthermore, I did not really see the death of a certian character "dispicable". I was under the impression that he was working double duty, telling some things to Koing and some things to Vassili, with a slight favor to Vassili. Koing found out of the spy, he followed the rules of war. I know that's a tough thing to say, but Koing did warn the spy, (*it can also be said he already knew of the spy; he was simply setting up a place for the Wargame, if you will. He exepected Vasseli to show up in a certian area about a certian time.)

Again, I take serious issue with your spoilers.

Response: You are right about the spoiler comments. I put a warning in. Thank you for reminding me to let people know. -David
