Written By: Joss Whedon Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Official Site: Alien Resurrection (1997) Synopsis:
The future. An old enemy. The perfect predator. Defeated but not destroyed. If only her killer instinct could be reconfigured, reformed ... resurrected.
The nefarious experiments begin. An unholy combination of human and alien genetics is discovered, made possible by an uneasy alliance between a renegade band of smugglers and a zealous cadre of scientists and officials. One subject is familiar, a woman horrifically linked to the alien species that now elicits so much scrutiny. Ripley is back and all is not what it seems. No amount of arrogance, science or technology can control the biological destiny that compels the aliens. A destiny that only Ripley understands, on a deeply personal, primal level. To combat the alien menace, Ripley must team up with the smugglers, including an enigmatic mechanic named Call, who may be the instrument of Ripley's resurrection or the weapon of her destruction. |

"WITNESS THE RESURRECTION"
David Bruce, Webmaster
In the last movie, Alien 3, Ripley died. Now, 200 years later she is resurrected from her DNA. She is virgin born in a science lab in a tube. She is born again, a clone of her former self. Resurrected in a new body that is capable of miraculous feats. The purpose here is to use her as a brood mare: she becomes the virgin birth mother of little alien monsters, which quickly grow up to be big evil monsters. They develop in her womb and are surgically removed. The interstellar human government wants to breed aliens for use in developing vaccines and medicines, even a superhuman gene pool. Ripley is the Virgin Mary and/or the New Eve -the virgin mother of the new super race. Ripley is part human and part alien with a remarkable body chemistry. Ripley is Virgin Mary and Jesus combined. To make this point clear there is a scene where she stabs herself in the middle of her hand signifying the crucified messianic hand of Jesus. The ship is huge and vast with many rooms connected by massive hallways. The ship reminded me of the brain with its many rooms. In one scene a man pulls an alien substance out of his brain. Light flashes along on the floor like neuron electrical flashes in the brain. Like the mind there are certain rooms we don't like to visit, but must. Ripley must deal with her imperfect and horrific past when she enters a room filled with failed attempts of her creation. Dealing with past certain events in our own memory banks can be just as horrifying. Sent from earth to help comes the Tramp Freighter with a crew that includes Call (Ryder). She is thought to be human. However, when she is shot in the stomach and falls 'dead' in the water (=grave, baptism) we learn that she is more than human when she is resurrected. She is a robot human. Dual natured like Jesus. Call and Ripley go to the Chapel to patch into the ship's computer. There, in the Chapel, is a huge cross and a computer Bible. Call crosses herself with her hand as she enters the Chapel and she bows at the cross. There is a scene similar to this in Amistad. Ripley removes the computer connection from the electronic Bible and plugs it into Call. This is an amazing scene filled with interesting icons and symbols. Leaving the Cross in the chapel they are now ready to defeat the evil monsters. Ripley uses the fact that she is the birth mother of the monsters to keep herself safe. She is able to encounter the monsters face to face.
The monsters are now self -breeding similar here to Jurassic Park. To escape, the women board a shuttlecraft, leaving the mother ship as it blows up killing all the alien monsters on board. All, except the baby monster that has boarded their craft in pursuit of its mother --Ripley. This monster must go. Ripley uses the corrosive blood from her hand and throws some on the craft's window, which puts a small hole in it. There is enough pressure to pull the little monster to the hole and suck it out in small pieces into outer space (=eternity). The blood on the hand (=Jesus' crucified hand) is also featured in Relic, Gattaca, and Amistad. In all these films it signifies salvation and freedom.
A new day is born as their space ship speeds home. The happy ending has an almost cosmic feel to it. Copyright © 1997 Hollywood Jesus. All rights reserved.
