The Film
Evil really does exist. And I think people of all creeds and faiths can somehow recognize this at the core of their beings. We just know that some things are not only wrong, but are actually the opposite of all that is good. Of course, beyond that we'll begin to disagree and differ on what is truly evil. For instance, I would suggest that slavery and racism are inherently evil. But it is clear that not everyone agrees with that stance, or they wouldn't still be thriving around the world, right? I'm sure that many Hollywood Jesus authors, over the years, have pointed out that evil is a spiritual concept and so horror films can surprisingly offer some of the best spiritual dialog.
Well,
The Evil Dead definitely throws evil right into our faces over and over again, and it is perhaps one of the all-time most beloved cult classics! What is that all about? Somehow, Director Sam Raimi tapped into something magical with this film. He created "the ultimate experience in grueling terror" from a place of genuine love for moviemaking and crafted a film that is on one hand brutally gory and relentless, and on the other hand playful. Apparently on release, the film was highly controversial, and even faced some legal battles in England over its content. What seemed to surprise folks as they learned more about the film was that the makers weren't debased sadists, but rather kindhearted, fresh-faced, young talent.
Here is my theory: We, as an audience, love to see the fantastic, even if the fantastic is twisted and dark. Sam Raimi and crew knew this, so they chose horror as their platform to assault our senses on a visceral level. Evil does that. We are shocked, scared, and horrified by what happens onscreen during the running time of
The Evil Dead. But we love it because of its creativity, craftsmanship, and, of course, because of Bruce Campbell's career-defining hero Ash!
The PackageThe Evil Dead is making its first appearance on Blu-ray in a grand fashion. I know, I know... if you are a fan, you probably already own two to three previous releases.
Evil Dead is a notoriously "double-dipped" title. But I really think this Blu-ray is the new definitive addition. For one thing, I really could see a quality increase in the image. The movie looks pretty great! And the biggest selling point is an all-new commentary with Sam Raimi, star Bruce Campbell, and producer Rob Tapert. Their focus is on the production and distribution of the film; it is great to hear their stories and learn a TON about the film. There is also a bonus DVD with HOURS of behind-the-scenes footage. I'm sure some of this stuff has been released before, but a large amount of it is quite new. I think this release will please the most discerning of
Evil Dead fans.
