Synopsis:
In celebration of its upcoming hundred-year anniversary, Paramount Studios is releasing a special collection of its films on called The Centennial Collection.

Paramount Pictures itself was created in 1912 at the hands of Adolph Zukor, who took performance to new heights by filming theatrical stage stars of the day in full-length moving pictures. The popularity of the new medium grew exponentially. The success of the original studio system depended on heavy investment and control of movie theaters and, of course, the film stars themselves. For many years, the studio was king. Powerful executives could make or break careers. Domination in these areas could only last so long, though, and by the time Sunset Boulevard was made in 1950, monopoly over movie theater chains had been challenged in court and broken.

But with this collection, older audiences get a chance to enjoy many of Paramount's classic movies all over again, while new viewers are treated to them for the first time, digitally mastered and restored using the latest technolog.

(This is actually from my wife... who insisted on keeping the DVD! I told her she'd have to do the reviews for this and Roman Holiday!)

One of the shining gems of the silver screen is 1954's Sabrina. Fresh from winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn portrays a chauffeur's daughter, Sabrina Fairchild, who is hopelessly in love with a high-society playboy. William Holden and Humphrey Bogart rounded out the marquee in this charming romantic comedy with a smart, witty script.

Sabrina will probably always reside in my short list of favorite films. It's a classic Cinderella story with a twist. Sabrina is a plain, unnoticeable girl who longs to be admired and invited to dance. She dreams about experiencing the life she only views from her perch in a tree. What we learn in this tale, however, is that Prince Charming isn't necessarily the road to happily-ever-after. Often, love is a journey which reveals our true heart along the way. Love might not be what ignites our passion in a worldly sense, but rather what quietly and surprisingly meets our needs and complements our personality in a subtle, comfortable blending of two lives. Sometimes love is found where we'd least expect it, if we would only take off our rose-colored glasses a moment to see that it's really right in front of our eyes.

The new Centennial Collection DVD includes many great featurettes. Audrey Hepburn fans will enjoy the look at Audrey as a fashion icon, as this was the first time she paired with Givenchy to create her signature style. Also interesting was the look at William Holden's career as well as the many supporting character actors who rounded out the cast and made their way into many other films of the day. Other features include: Sabrina's World, Sabrina Documentary, Behind the Gates: Camera, and Paramount in the '50s.
